Got a GST with 90k miles on it. Should I mod it?

Another dumb question from the newbie. I have a 99 GST with 90k miles on it. While I've had much of the regular maintenance done, I can't say my car has been well maintained. It's in good, but not great, shape.

The car is still stock and I'm thinking about doing the first two stages from this upgrade page in the near term, and stage 3 later this year. But is it worth it on my car? Should I get another cleaner, lower mileage GST and mod it instead? I don't want to spend a ton of money on this car if it's not going to last long....

there are people effectively modding a dsm with 160000 on the odometer. i have 120,000 and i am modding mine. just make sure you keep an eye on things.

Just keep up with your maint. and you'll be fine...

I've got like 160k+ on the chassis (1g).... less than 10k on my block... and in about a week I'll have 0 on my head... I've got a e3b16g doing from 17-20 psi... soon to be on a 50 trim and be daily driven.

I've got a buddy (2g) that is around the 110-120k mark and boosts 22-25 psi on a 50 trim daily, and is upgrading to a 5162 (GT35R).... daily driven.

I've got a bud (2g) that has 83k on the clock and is taking the guy above's 50 trim and putting it on his w/ basically same setup... daily driven.

Just to name a couple.
Mod it up! :thumb:

Personally I wouldn't because Mitsubishi engines aren't the greatest, especially the 7 bolt. That's just my 02......

^--- from a guy whose only engine mods = intake, wires, motor mounts, and an obx fmic... pfffft

Best bet do a compression check.

Even better do a leak down test.

That will tell ya real quick if it's ok.

It's really the only way to know for sure if you are worried about blowing up the engine.

To be honest though if your worried about little things like an engine just stay stock. Upgrading is super fun and addictive, but the momment you put that first upgrade on your car you are shortening the life of that car.

Though breakage due to other upgrade parts, silly driving, Bad tunning , and the like.
The upkeep on the car is going to increase.

Good luck.

Thanks for the comments everyone. I think I'll play it safe and check my engine before moving forward for now.

Ok, just did a compression test.

From the passenger side to the driver side:

174
179
157
175

Not horrible, but I'm not happy with the 157. As a newbie, is this something I can investigate more, or should I take it in for service?

Yes that 157 is NO good. There suppose to be within 10% of each other.

Not sure what to tell ya though. Maybe someone with a little more knowlage can chime in.

From a guy who realizes the truth, and just because I listed that doesn't mean that's all I have...pffft....
With all due respect to 98turbo, as he is a friend of mine, take it from a guy who knows more about dsms than he does, in my personal opinion it is fine to mod a car with that many miles, mine has 127,000 on 7 bolt, im modding it (started at 113,000). If you are short on cash and cant pay for general repairs that come with fixing up any car, keep the modifications milder. For financial reasons (im a college student) im just aiming at a modest 13.5. I have owned my current dsm for a year and have had zero problems with it (other than the clutch having to being replaced, but it was just old). In all honesty, my 420a eclipse that i owned for 4 years gave me more problems in general than my high mileage talon.

I think the compression check came out rather good...

*do your maintenance + recalls, dont let 98turbo get you down.*

My 6 bolt has 170 origional miles on it, almost perfect compression after a valve, piston ring job. Before you start modding any engine though you should chedk the compression, make sure all the belts and tensioners are good etc..

Bought mine with 97k on it. Safer than sorry was worth it to me. Just did the 1g JDM swap. So yes, I did mod it with a lot of miles. :)
