Goofy sound from the engine compartment at 2500-3000 rpm in gear?

Aright guys, I have my first dsm i bought for 3 hundo. Its a piece to be honest but the engine runs fairly well. Anywho, my problem is that at 2500-3000 rpm the engine make a funny noise and it only does it in gear. The sound is like nails across a chalk board...seriously. I dont really know any other way of describing it. If you've ever put like a toy wheel on a nail and blown it with an airhose? Thats kinda what it sounds like, the wheel rocks back and fourth as its being spun and will slow down and resist spinning cus its not flush with the nail. Its wild. Either/or, I'm concerned cus i'm currently working on getting another shell to transplant my motor because my shell is a rustbucket.
I'm really not sure where to go with this problem? I mean if i opened up the damn motor, i'm not sure i'll know what to be looking for. I've built 350's and such but never had to diagnose a f'ed up noise like this. I have a slight suspition it could be in my transmission. I really dont know if this is a cronic problem or not. Can ANYONE shine any light on this problem? or is it even a problem? Could it be my turbo? I can hear it spool up so i have reason to believe its not my turbo. And the noise doesn't follow the revs of the turbo. Should i rebuild? I havn't had a chance to do a comp test.

I had my power steering pump make a noise like that a while ago. It sounded horrible. It was just extremely low on fluid. Check your turbo for any shaft play, that will rule it out. I've never heard a turbo make noise like that before.WTF

First thing i would do is find out if its rpm related. Does it happen the same time every time in the certian rpm range. If not, then its probably load related. Find out that so we can help you.

Well I did check it out again and it'll rev up to 2.5k-3k and it wouldnt' always do it but thats why i listed the range. I let it warm up. I drove it around the area and it happens up until 3500 or so. I think it happens in the lower gears where rpms raise quicker. I'll try and record it and put it on here. Its a wicked sound. If any of you have had your t-case go out that what it would sound like. Or atleast mine did. I'll try to get you guys more information tonight. I did check the powersteering pump, Its about half full i would say. I dont think thats it. Maybe i'll run the car with the hood off and have my buddy drive it down the street. I hafta do the transplant anyways might as well make it easier while i'm at it.
I'm kind of stumped. Can yall tell me what i'm up against here? What are the possible problems? I was thinking throwout bearing? Maybe a main bearing? Maybe cams? A bearing in the tranny?
Anywho, any light would help. If any of yall wanna call me and listen to it thatd be rad too.
