Ask Me, Virginia
In one of my posts, I mentioned trying to make an ultra uber reliable 1g DSM for rediculously long highway commutes.

One of my ideas was to run a Gates Blue belt.

A few questions about that:

1) Will the timing belt be more reliable than a stocker conitech/gates under low boost or does this type of belt just increase reliability under high boost?

2) Could using this belt increase my timing belt interval change? (I doubt it but figured that I would ask).

If neither of these apply, I am questioning my initial logic.

Thanks

It most certainly will not increase the interval between belt changes. If you want a strong belt with Kevlar reinforcement, the Evo IX TB is the way to go. Factory Kevlar. It's only around $11 or so more than our belts and roughly $40+ cheaper than a gates. Its a high strength Kevlar belt, just not a fancy color. It looks, feels, and even smells just like the "racing" belts that people might pay hundreds of dollars for, just a lot cheaper. Kevlar belts are just less likely to shear when improperly adjusted(read: overly tightened) or subjected to abuse from high rpm romping on a killer head setup. I run it on my daily. Works just fine when installed correctly (as would other TBs of similar quality). You really couldn't go wrong with OEM, Kevlar or not.

Part # is 1145A038 for the IX Kevlar belt and NOT the more common MD326059 for DSM/EVO I-IX-(IX obviously as well since all the belts are the same) . Jnz has it for like $75.

Thanks, I never stopped to think of it but you are correct.

It's not about boost, it's about aggresive springs/cams and high RPM's.

OEM. :thumb:

I like this a lot. So this part number is the same size etc and will fit a 1g/6 bolt/4g63 with no hassles?

This still won't extend my belt change interval will it? :D

I'll be racking up about 30k miles per year on this car.

Thanks

I would seriously just buy an oem belt or a gates belt, they are pretty much the same thing. I have ran nothing but gates on every car that i have ever installed a timing belt on.

I might just go this route then. I like the Kevlar idea just in case I make a mistake though. I have had a timing belt snap on a past 1g before. Some valves got bent and some pistons hit the valves.

One of the previous owners must have done the job incorrectly but that kind of stuff gets remembered.

Yup all timing belts are the same for all DOHC 4G63 engines be it 6bolt/7bolt or Evo. It's the components like tensioners and pulleys that aren't interchangeable.

No it still wont increase the life of the belt. It's just added insurance against failure during the normal period of use.

Still you'll only need to do the belt every two years and the tensioner (and pulleys/waterpump) every 4 or so. Dont't forget the balance shaft belt as well. OEM should suffice, but if you really want one in kevlar, you'll have to buy that particular belt aftermarket.

Thanks for the info. Check out my ever growing balance shaft thread if you have a moment. :D

I'd like your contribution as well if you haven't already.

It looks like I won't be bothering with the balance shaft belt one way or another.

:D

Thanks

Just stick with a regular timing belt and you'll be fine. I've made 100's of 1/4 and 1/8 mile passes on the same $25 gates timing belt over the past couple years. Gates also makes a timing belt component kit, it has everything except the hydraulic tensioner for $58. I've used that kit in the past and it's very nice quality.

Right now rockauto has Contitech timing belts on closeout for $7.60, as of writing this, they show only 2 left in stock.

When I checked there was one. When you check there will be none!! ROFL

Thanks for finding that. I didn't even bother to use a coupon code when you spilt the beans. I bet the other guy didn't either. ROFL

I can always cancel soon if this is not the route I want to go down.
