Gas tank door trouble

Hey everyone, lately I have been having an issue with my gas tank door. I'll pull the lever and I feel the mechanism move, but then when I walk around to fill it up the door is still closed. Obviously this is inconvenient because you can't open the door from the outside and I look rediculous walking back and forth from the drivers side door all the way around to the gas door sometimes several times before it finally props open. Anybody have experience with this? Any tips?

I always pushed on side closest to the front of the car and the it would move some and then pull lever and it would pop

Have someone pull the lever while you force door open (press on front or pry rear). Then while they move lever make sure the plunger moves all the way back (may need cleaning). Then remove the pop open spring on the front and stretch/bend it out a little (this is usually the problem).

I agree it may need cleaning, best thing to do would be take it apart and examine it

replace the spring. its either broken or just weak

Yes, it is the same part. They just came up with a new part number when they used it on their newer cars.

Assuming your wire is tensioned fine as it runs under your carpet through the body. Then that clip should push the door open releasing it. But you can easy make your own with a piece of metal or thick weather stripping (around/pieces on body were it meets with door). should be plush enough to push the door out when you pull/release your lever.

Mine did this, I used a pack of gum or what ever I had in the car to hold the gas lever up while I walked around and pushed the gas door open. Turns out the spring just fell off and was next to the gas cap.
