It is possible, but the VR4 trans's are awd. And if your car is a GST than it would be of no gain.

im looking at buying a 95 gsx and he said it had a built galant vr4 in it. he is selling it for 1500 alls it needs is an engine

Why not

2g dsm trannies have 3 engine mounting points Basically the tranny holds the motor


A galant vr4 is the same as a 1g dsm tranny but it only has 1 mounting point


galant vr4 tranny will not work on your 2g dsm

^^^ He's right.

The front roll stop of a 2G is bolted to the tranny case. If you have a 1G (or GVR4) tranny, then there's no place to bolt up the front roll stop.

If you can find a jdm GVR4 tranny it will work, and you can switch between fwd and awd!!! There's a guy on the local boards with a converted spyder who is using a galant tranny.

Very interesting. I've never heard of this tranny before. It appears to have the roll stop bracket in the right place for a 2G as well (which is weird because all USDM Galants VR4's have it on the block just like 1Gs).

The only other issue I forsee with that tranny is the speedometer connection.

He is a mod over on Talk (sean845 I believe) so I'm sure you could ask him about it over there. He didn't mention anything about that problem, so I'd imagine either he found a way to make it work.

Looks like the roll stops and the speed sensor are all hooked up. I can't confirm if that is a GVR4 tranny or not, but it does appear that you won't have any issues running it in that 2G.

I'm familiar with the selectable t-cases, but not the selectable trannys.
Why would you need both? Wouldn't one accomplish the same thing as the other? School me.

From the thread I posted.

You see the sticker that has 4wd and 2wd? There is the plunger next to it and when it is extended (as it is) it locks the VC together for 2wd operation and when you rotate and bolt down the metal retainer thing it pushes the plunger in it unlocks the VC for normal awd operation. The t-case has a similar plunger that lets the driveshaft free-wheel from the output shaft of the trans.

Nope you HAVE to have both of them. Can't have one or the other. Gotta have both. If you go to VFAQ and then under drivetrain is a little subsection for the JDM transmission

Sorry to bring an old thread back to life but I'm also wondering about this. My 2g GSX trans has a crack in the case. I have a Jdm gvr4 trans and t-case, I'm wondering if it is direct drop in for a 2g, I have read into it but no one gives a for sure answer. If anyone could chime in that would be much appreciated. Thanks
