Galant VR-4 Restoration #129/1458

Always wanted one ... purchased this car in pretty rough shape. Going to attempt to make this a restoration project with my son.

So it's finally warming up around here. I was off today for Good Friday and so was my son, so we put some time in on the car. Picked up where we left off with the steering rack and got the GSX rack installed today. This rack still had the tie rods on it, so we wanted to get them off. They didn't come off too easy, had to get the torch out and really heat them up a bit.

Getting the rack back in was a bit more challenging than getting it out, but with some time and effort we got it in. I still need to put the pinch bolt back in, but everything else is hooked back up.

Here it is from under the car.

While we were at it, figured it was time to get the sway bar back in that we removed and painted back in the fall.

I searched all over the internet during the winter looking for sway bar bushings, but they seem to be NLA. I found a company in Australia on eBay who claimed they made silicone aftermarkets, but when I order them I got a message saying they didn't actually have any. So I ended up cleaning up the ones we got a bit, they're not horrible, but I would have preferred to go new.

Here is back on the car.

Front hubs are with another member here on the board attempting to get bearings pressed out. If we can get the front 5-lug swap complete we'll be able to get wheels on this things and start focusing our attention back on wrapping up the engine accessories. I'd really like to turn the key on this thing by the end of the summer. There's a lot to do yet, but I think we can pull it off - I don't want the car sitting outside another winter.

I made a comment in one of my previous posts that I knew we had purchased brake lines for this car years ago, but I couldn't find them. Found them. Finally.

With that, we are able to install and wrap everything up in the back of the car.

We're getting there. Gonna order some different fuel filler neck materials tonight. We need to fab up a filler neck, the one removed was toast and the OEM's are long NLA.
