Is it possible to simply bolt in a center differential and buy an awd tranny to make this conversion,. I know a new exhaust system is needed. I couldn't find if this was done or if it is possible for na motor.

Honestly this has been covered so many times.

It is more than that. You have to cut the center of the car out and weld in an awd tunnel... Not worth it

Just sell it and buy a awd if you want one that bad.

There was a guy who did it on his 1g, or i think almost made it. Put it simply. You can't do it. Now, with that said, money can and time usually buys you anything. :thumb:

You need a whole rear, driveshaft, awd tranny, center diff, a awd fuel tank, awd exhaust. you also need a welder to make your own subframe bolt points for the rear subframe. I wouldn't even try it man.

Oh yea. Forgot the tunnel.

Maybe I just missed it but I'm not sure about the AWD tunnel being necessary, aren't they the same?

AWD Conversion

sell the fwd buy a awd save time money and headaches
Actually buying the parts and putting it together yourself is cheaper than the difference in price of an AWD in most cases. I know Paul has said it only cost him like $1400 (I think, or was that $1300?) for his swap, and with the investment he already had into his car he couldn't sell it and start over.

Again for you incompetent people:

1g the chassis are not the same. WASTE of time.

2g the chassis are similar but you still need to add the center for the drive shaft tunnel....

On a 2g it may be worth it, because of the price. Not on a 1g...

Not to mention if you own this car in say cali you get it inspected and the title still reads it as a front drive car and you take it to an inspection place they will look it over and realize your car is awd.

No go... especially if you have a na car and you get insurance and the insurance guy sees the turbo.... yep yet again no go....

Then you deal with the police under investigation for vin swapping cars.

Stop asking redundant questions.

Fwd to awd swap in a 2g is completely different then the 1g's (which it looks like the OP is). The 2g swap is defently doable, as most of the parts are just "bolt ons" & only minor welding is required. The 1g fwd to awd swap is much more difficult & requires alot of fab work. Now as said, it has been done a few times but for 99% of the people, it isn't worth doing/aren't able to do it.

First, thanks Daren for the polite and informative reply.

Second,
Again for you incompetent people:

Nobody else had asked that question, so how was it redundant?

Maybe I don't know much about the 1G driveshaft tunnel, or 1Gs in general, but I am not incompetent. I phrased my previous post as a question, obviously because I was hoping for an explanation, which Daren was nice enough to provide for me without lashing out.

Right on...

I need to stop drinking while on the forums...

Alright. I will explain it to you nicer. Read this post by mavisky whne this other guy was trying to do the same thing. Mavisky and I both agreed to it was not worth it after all the custom fabbing that needed to be done.
