is it possible to convert or am i better off selling my fwd and buying a awd?

To do a conversion you would need a AWD Transmission for starters...then rest of the AWD Components for the rear. Your exhaust system may not longer fit it its not stock... You would be better off selling your car, and finding an AWD.

A search would have found you tons of questions like yours and all answers are the same. Yes it can be done but realistically it is not worth it.

Fwd to awd in a 1g is possible. but not worth it. And it would be very very hard. if you want to spend the money to have a 1 in a billion car then be my guest. To start with, you would need to fabricate a new trunk pan, and the suspension is completely different between fwd and awd. Even if you put the whole rear suspension in a 1g fwd it would still have nowhere to bolt up. just buy an awd shell for $500 LOL

I think that it depends on a few things:
1) What mods do you have on your car? Is it worth selling yours and starting from scratch on an AWD?
2) Do you have the funds to have a spare AWD car or parts?
3) Do you have the knowledge, time and tools to do the FWD to AWD swap?

I looked into the same thing. Check out the HOWTO on the conversion, there's so many parts, so much work, and custom fabrication to deal with. You gotta be dead set on doing it and have a good reason for not sticking with your GST.

On the flip side, I've got a TSI and have been looking for an AWD model to upgrade to. Good AWD's about the same mileage/year run about 1-2 grand more. Definitely not a bad trade, considering the work/hassle I'd save.

Too many negatives for the conversion. Go for the AWD.
