    Greetings,
Does anyone know or have a definitive list of what fwd axles fit what transmissions and hubs? Searching has been fairly fruitless other than anecdotal speculation. I am fairly certain there was a change over in 1993 on the (manual) transmission side, but nothing is clear other than that. I am trying to put a late 1g/2g fwd manual tranny in my 1991 Laser turbo specifically, but a good interchange list would be very helpful. Also do same year auto and manual transmissions share the same axles?

    Thanks in Advance!

Are you trying to upgrade axles?

90-92 used the same axles. After that, axles sizes increased. The later model 2gs also had a spline count change. You will not be able to use the larger axles. If you are looking for the best upgrade, I would suggest the equal-length half-shaft mod since you are a 91 model. Here is some information about the swap. It is fairly easy:

Sorry I was on an Android browser and it went ape#*!@ and posted before I was finished.

Not trying to upgrade, I have a 1991 Laser with a terrible grinding tranny (2nd, sometimes 1st and 5th). I'm only keeping this body so I can have something to play with until I get an AWD to put my engine in. I'd also like to get a better transmission in it for when it comes time to sell. There are plenty of 2g fwd manual transmissions around that I can pick up, but I need to find an axle that will work with them.

Based on that link, it almost sounds like anything 1993+ FWD will fit?

    Thanks!

From reading your post, it sounds like you are going to put a different trans-axle in your Laser. Here is some additional information on axles.

1990 model year to 1992 model year FWD Turbo DSM trans-axles all have the same size
input shaft on the axle as 90-98 AWD Turbo DSMs and share the same size gears in the front diff.

The 93-94 FWD Turbo DSM trans-axle have the beefier diff and the bigger axles.

A 95-99 2G FWD Turbo DSM trans-axle has same beefier diff and bigger axles. The difference between the 93-94 1G axles and 95-99 2G axles are the length.

Bottom line is if you have a FWD Turbo trans-axle you want to swap into your DSM make sure it's for your year DSM.

Yes you can put a 93-94 trans-axle into your 90-92 DSM but make sure you also use the 93-94 axles, otherwise you'll have to swap diffs in order to make your old 90-92 axles fit.

That is exactly what I've been looking for, thank you!

Last question at the risk of sounding retarded, why did the length change in 1995? Would it be possible to mate a 95+ axle/trans-axle combo to a 1g car or is that a big fat no?

And yes you are correct I am trying to see what my options are for replacing the terrible transmission I have in the 1991 Turbo.

Ive ran 95 axles in my 1g. The length is very minimal and no enough to do any damage. As for the year breaks its not as much as you think it is. As per Caps they even show the same small spline axle up to the first half of 94. It was a late 94 1g that got the cross over axle. Same large spline as the 2G. I am currently running a 2g front diff and axles in my 91 case. Only difference is the spider gears.

1wkfwd. Are you sure about that year switch? I don't have caps at the moment. I could've sworn that with the model year change to 93 all FWD were larger spline. I've run into the problem before years and years ago.
To the OP the reason the length changes should be obvious. 95 is a totally different chassis. If you want to use a 2g tranny in your FWD it will use the larger spline axles so just use the larger spline 1g axles.

I'm doing a swap to my manual fwd 1g 1991 to auto with a 2g auto fwd trans I found out that my axles are to skini to fit in the trans what axles do I need in order to make my 2g auto trans in mt 1g manual shell ?

so if I have a 1g fwd maual with a 2g auto trans I can use the 2g axles and it will work
    ?

Is there a difference in the splines between a 2g non turbo an a 2g GST/GSX or are just the lengths different?

Alright I’ve got a 99 eclipse GST Spyder. 2.0 turbo fwd 5 speed. I’ve tried multiple 2g cv axles and they are too large on the input shaft side. The numbers stamped on the tranny are
    W5M332MUZ1
    VF1D1
respectively. If anyone can help it would be great

googled the numbers and got literally nothing.

W5M33...anything is an AWD transmission. Try an AWD axle. Since the 1993 model year, FWD turbo models had larger axles at the differential than AWD models.

So should I try a 2G or 1G awd axle?

    Depends. Which axle?

My gut recommendation is a 2G axle, but answer that and we can guide you from there.

The cup on the one that came out of the car is different than any of the 2G ones I can find. All the new are round and the original has the 3 indents/different shape

You are using an awd trans. Use awd axles. You have a 2g chassis. You use 2g axles. End of story
