After having gone through the paces with my DSM, It no doubt has been a struggle but I have no plan on letting next to nothing stop me from one day having built a monster DD. Together with my garage we have drawn up a full engine rebuild which will set the base for one day creating a very reliable and fast car. The garage has thrown together a rough quote for me and I thought I'd post it here and get some responses from the DSM community. The listed prices for parts is as available to my shop. It is understood between myself and the garage that any part I can find for a better price I will purchase instead of having my shop do it. So yeah just throw all your thoughts, ideas and suggestions at me. One quote is for a standard rebuild of the 2.0L the other a stroker build.

Currently I am looking at sending my block to jacks transmission to be built and my transmission to Sheptrans. And the remaining parts that I will need to get the car up and running I will purchase through vendors on DSMtuners. Thoughts?

IMO you can get a built Engine for ALOT cheaper. Places like Porters performance you can get a built short or long block for alot cheaper. Another thing i saw was dont use synthetic oil on first start up or break in, you want to use a oil that is high in zinc. Lucas sells a zinc additive, or even use Rotella 15w-40 Diesel oil, i use that in all of my engine (they are chevy 350's naturally aspirated). These are just my thoughts and good luck on your car

Porters performance doesn't have very good reviews from fellow DSMers on this site. Check out their reviews in the vendor directory. I am strongly considering working with a supporting DSMtuner vendor to build my engine as it seems it is the more economical way to go than my garage. But I'm finding it difficult to lay trust with companies such as DSM graveyard and Portersperformance as their reviews seem to be sub par. Jacks transmission reviews seem to be much better. Any advice, suggestions or recommendations you guys can provide for which shop to do business with would be greatly appreciated.

I didn't see timing belt tension-er on the list so you will probably wanna add that, also a stock crank can easily handle that power. If stroking it why not go with a g4cs block instead and again save yourself the cost of a crank. In my opinion putting a car together is more fun than driving it, and if you want a really fast car that would cost 17k that you don't have to put any work into is this even the right car for you. As far as your parents not letting you go to technical school are they also not letting you open a Hanes manual.

Talk about 'got jokes?'. Time and tools don't come with a Hanes manual last time I checked. You try going to school 5 days a from 8-5. Then swim club weekends 9-4. And be up 530AM Monday-Sat. everyday to go to the gym. I'll make this car happen whether you or anyone else think it's right for me. I'll do it all in good time and on a 17 year old's budget. This car is sticking with me for life.

i am dying to know what these "re and re and ..." things are. Re dip the block? ok, but re and re and weld the center diff? i would think i should take to someone who could just weld it right, the first time. No re-welding required. I hate to bash guys i dont know, but this invoice needs a breakdown bad.

Have you thought about "if shit happens"? If things go right, other things are bound to go wrong. You DO have an older DSM, after all......

Your budget, whether it be $17 or even $17,000 wont make a ounce of a difference if it's not done right. What happens if you run out of money and you end up with a even worse running car? :ohdamn:

Since someone else will be doing it, don't you think they might forget something and then later say "Not my problem!" or "Fix it yourself if you want it done your way!", or one of my personal favorites, "I'm busy! Come some other day!".

Mechanics are professional crooks nowadays, kid. With this shitty economy, They will take you for all you got and you might end up with a barely running car.

DSM'ers fix/tune their own cars! You should do the same, then you will be a TRUE tuner! Plus you can brag that you did it on a budget, all by yourself! :hellyeah:

I'v been there with the time shortages of going to school full time and having my talon an hour and a half away, again money paid for some else's time could be paying for your new tools. So if you are gonna invest in your car all power to you and the talon. Anyways if the shop doesn't specialize in DSM's i suggest you look into the little things that are done to these engine to make them reliable, such as 3g lifters, porting the head oil passage, BSE and porting the oil pressure relief hole.

As others have said that is supper steep and I doubt they really know how to build them. That looks like the I dont want or know how to do the Job price.

Did not read the whole list but a built long block at our Shop is around 5k installed broke in with 2nd oil change ready to go. Could dump another $1500 Into the head with cams, springs, new valves, Valve grind. For that kinda of $$ BC would be the last choice of cams, either FP or GSC is the cam of choice these days.

If I could charge that much I would drive up and pick it up and bring it back free of charge :)

HOLY ####ING SHIT, run far far away from that shop. Thats the most outrageous quote ive ever seen. You can get built short blocks for 2k-2500 brand new. I would have laughed in their face if they handed me that.
