i just ordered a walbro 255 and am wondering if i can just install it from above the car (in the hatch under the spare tire area). I know you can get to the pump from there but everyone is telling me i have to drop my fuel tank and do it from under the car. Whats best?

You don't need to drop the tank.

You will need to get under the car and disconnect the rubber hose from the hard lines running up front since usually that hose won't come off the fuel pump assembly without destroying the fuel line coming out of the P.A. due to rust.

The P.A. is attached to the tank with a bunch of small nuts on the studs from the tank. Those are also likely rusted solid and you will need to carefully work them loose so you don't break the studs off and wind up drilling the tank and threading to put new studs in. Lots of PB Blaster over several days and gripping any nuts that a socket wouldn't hold with big vice grips allowed me to gently work them back and forth to break up the rust and get all of them out without breaking any.

All of this is done through the access panel in the rear hatch floor except for the hose.

On my '91 the 10 years of road salt had weakened the hard fuel line from the P.A. to the point where just the weight of putting a flare wrench on the fuel line was enough to cause it to break and I wound up getting a "new" unrusted P.A. from a California junk yard.
