Alright, finally got to working on my 1996 Eagle Talon 420a. I can crank the car just fine, not much resistance. Fuel and air seem to be okay, but I have 0 spark.
Here are the facts as I know them:

  • Firstly, original engine caught fire over 12 years ago and was replaced with a 1999 420a out of an eclipse. And you can tell. Lots of wires redone and stuff like that, but it wasn't a poorly done swap overall.
  • Coil pack is receiving power, coil pack is also brand new and I redid the wiring just in case it was done poorly before.
  • Cam and crank sensors are also brand new. Have not tested crank sensor, but cam sensor should at least be receiving power since I redid the wiring and tested it with a meter.
  • ASD relay is working, and clicks when the car begins to crank.
  • Injectors are rebuilt and fuel is getting to the rail. Dont have pressure numbers or anything
  • Air appears to be brand new and no obstructions otherwise
  • Car will turn over, and the cranking sounds much more consistent now that there is a new coil pack.
  • battery is known to be good, chassis ground for the battery had to be replaced due to corrosion.
Now, here are some symptoms:
  • Check engine light comes on during cranking, as does the battery light
  • No tach bounce during cranking
  • No stored codes
  • No spark from the coil pack wires
The more and more I read on here begins to point to ECU, but I'm also wondering if there are any avenues I can explore before jumping to that conclusion.
Let me know if I missed something or if I should be running other tests.

There is a test procedure for the crankshaft position sensor. That is also a common cause of no spark with the 420A. The connector can also get soaked in oil and short out if the valve cover were ever leaking. I would make sure the connector still locks, has a clean connection, and test the sensor. I have the FSM page in a jumbled mess of thousands of photos, so you'd have to bear with me to recieve that. Unless you have the FSM downloaded already, in which case you can read through the ignition system section.
