I believe this is the proper place to put this as it is pretty basic. Try as I might to find a post answering my specific question, I cannot find one.

Has anyone successfully removed the front floor sound deadening without taking the whole dashboard out? Were you able to get enough access to paint over the exposed area with the dashboard in. I really would like to not have to go that far as I plan to strip the car down in the winter, but finding rust under the material and need to address that now before it goes beyond surface.

I removed all the sound deadening in mine but it's been a long time ago so can't really remember. But I do know my dash was already out at the time, if I recall correctly, there is a mat and deadening material almost all the way up the firewall. I do know it at least runs up behind the HVAC components under the dash.

Yeah, I don't want to remove the firewall mat, just get all the floor stuff up, clean it of any surface rust, paint it and then put down some dynamat or equaivalent. The trickiest part looks to be the tunnel portion by the firewall.

Ours was so baked, that it popped right off. Used a putty knife and it lifted off. Yes we had to address floor pan rust too, and you are right to do that before more sound deadening goes on, because the new sound mat won't come off very easily, compared to the factory mat.

You can see some of our pictures in our build thread, post #52.

You got all the floor material off with dash in, up to where floor meets firewall?

No. Stopped at the firewall, A majority of the road noise comes from the tires, and the exhaust. Deadening the all of the wheel well covers, the entire floor, and the trunk, made a big difference. I understand why you would want to do the firewall, but removing and reinstalling the entire interior was a huge job, in addition to all of the work putting the deadening material in. Removing the dash and installing sound deadening behind it can be done later too.

I definitely don't want to do the firewall. I was hoping it was a complete separate pad from the floor pieces. I have bad OCD, so if I pull up on the floor and the firewall comes with it, my OCD is going to make me strip that dash out to get it all.

What material are you thinking of?....I just did this with peel n seel from lowes....I left my trunk as the spare tire part was almost rusted through. I have to cut that whole pan from my gst that I'm transplanting from....I'll post pics as soon as my phone stop acting like a D!$k. but yea, Its ALOT of work but I'm sure it will be well worth it in the end.

As u can see got i got some bad rust in the spare tire area so i left that and the trunk for now till i repair that with pieces from the gst. But man this was very time consuming....it cutting the bolt holes and all that jazz that makes it take alot longer.

So dash is out, but still of no help because the real issue is the stupid firewall blanket comes down so far that you need to find a way to tuck it out of the way to get access to the front most portion of the tunnel. I am considering using a razor and trimming the blanket so it contours with the firewall.

Hak, did you remove all the factory floor covering stuff, or just apply your matting over the top?
