hey guys!
i just discovered when i was changing my tires yesterday.....
i saw rubber axel blown..... it is leaking some kind of grease kinda brownies.....
the grease came from inside the rubber....
is it ok to drive?

thanks for the help

It is for a VERY LIMITED amount of time. The boot needs to be replaced and repacked with grease. Your easiest option is just to get a replacement axle for your car since you have to remove it anyways. Most all axles carry a lifetime warranty so if it happens again it's free.

Is it ok to drive.....yes. For a long time.....no. Also depends what you are gonna do. You can buy just the boot well if u drive it now u can get debris in there that could cause damage. If your gonna buy a whole new half shaft...screw it..its all gonna be replaced.

its ok to drive on for very short time...dont wait to long the shaft could seperate and then you will be in big touble...shafts arent very expensive you should replace the whole thing, but the repair kit will work for a while if your short on cash

Listen to the wiseman no it's not ok. That boot protect that gear in that lubes the bearings to flex with bumps and rotating etc. If dirty contaminates the grease it will not do its job anymore so it can kill those bearings and seize up. Just buy a new axle from auto zone they have life time warranties

If you pull it now and replace the boot, you can keep using it. Replacing the boot is a total PITA when you consider a new/rebuilt axle can be had for 50-70 bucks from any auto-parts store. It's safe to drive untill it starts clicking when you go around turns. The louder the clicking, the dumber you are for driving on it. Plus, it's making a big mess under there. It's spraying grease all over your wheel, caliper, control arms,etc...

is it hard to replace them??
Hard if you have nothing but a 10-piece 3/8-drive socket set. If you have the right tools, it's an easy job.

any idea why did this happen?
Are you serious? The car is 15 years old....shit's going to break. The polymers in the boot becomes hard and brittle over time.

I wouldn't complain if I were you- I sold an axle at work the other day for an '04 Malibu that literally exploded.

It's hard to say how long it has been broken. If you were getting a clicking sound when you were turning, you could already have a damaged axle. If the grease dries out you have extra friction and the axle will fail over time.

It is recomended you replace the axle if the boot has been broken.

aah! WTF I broke something in that launch it wasnt the axel, well that boot is busted but its not bad bad if you get what I'm saying.. its leaking and clicking and clutch isnt grabbing.. I'm thinking I broke the diff.. OMG good thing I always have 2 of everything.. :aha: still :banghead:
