You don't have to remove the rotor. Remove the axle nut, remove the 2 bolts holding the strut to the spindle, unbolt the axle carrier from the block, pull the spindle out and seperate the axle from the spindle. Than slide the axle from the transmission.

Remember to that it is going to require some force on the axle to separate it from the trani, it is designed to stay in!
Also, for first timers, i found it easy to move the strut out of the way as much as possible and disconnect the caliper brake line from the CALIPER if it is giving you trouble. Or ziptie it away to the strut spring.
I also always make good use of a pickle fork if having troubles with the ball joint or popping the axle out.
One more thing, remember that RE-ALIGNMENT is going to be possibly not a necessity, (depending how and what you took apart) but trust me, just do it.

Good luck, Props on just diving in and DIY.:hellyeah:

The driver side axle on an awd will slide right out from the transmission after the carrier is unbolted from the block. There is no clip on the end of the intermediate shaft like on the passenger side and driver side of a fwd. Also there is nothing that needs to be done with the strut. It isn't in the way on a 1g. Once you un bolt the spindle from the strut the spindle will swing out enough for the axle to come out of the spindle. A pickle fork is the worst tool for removing ball joints (ball joint doesn't have to come off on a 1g) and also isn't a good tool for removing the axle from transmission.

If you are talking about the driver's side axle, it sounds like you have not removed the 2 bolts (14mm) holding the axle to the back of the block. Once you unbolt them, the axle slides out easily.

If you are talking about the passenger side axle, it is easier to pry it out with a long screwdriver...pops right out.

Its acutally quite easy, not sure why you went and took your caliper off , or rotor as it is not necessary. Get the Carrier (two 14mm Bolts) off and try grabbing the axel cup (green) and give it a pull if that doesnt work try getting a screw driver and hammer and tap on the screwdriver cup to get it to break free. Good luck

Heres how i do it: Remove just one nut on the straight LCA(lower control arm). Jack up the curved LCA so the hub assembly clears the top of the ball joint. Break the axle loose out of the hub and just turn the wheel assembly outward. Like turning the wheel to the left. Works like a charm and you only undo one nut, well 2 including the axle nut.

Your a 1g, just noticed. May still work for you but im not sure
