Edmonton,
My friend borrowed my car and thought he was doing a nice deed by filling my tank up... bad thing is that he put in 87 octane rather than 91. I don't know how bad this is for my car and i'm kind of pissed . Should i just ride it out? Thanks

two things i know of. One. Drain the fuel. Two. DO NOT BOOST IT. This means 0. 0. 0. 0. 0. PSI no maybe can just do 1. means 0. BUT you need to let the car die, literaly bfore you pt in 91. let it completely run out of gas and try to start it a couple times to get that crap out of your lines.

Oh jeez. Just go to your local VatoZone and pick up a can of NOS Race Formula octane booster and dump half of it in your tank if you're that worried. Your 87 will instantly become 93. And no, none of the other octane boosters are worth a crap so don't bother with them.

Draining 16 gallons is a pain in the ass so octane booster is your easiest way out.

Thank you, is this stuff expensive????

NOS race is about 10 bux. Race gives you 6 octane.

The stuff lower than that gives you 3 octane, and is about 6 bucks.

I think they have higher grade called Offroad aswell, which gives you 8?

The NOS stuff really does work. It actually increases it from 93 to 99.

Bah, 10 bucks for a whole bottle. You might want to pick up an extra set of spark plugs as well since any octane booster will create deposits on them and turn them orange. It's not a big deal but it's a good idea to change them after you run that tank dry and add in some fresh fuel.

For the octane booster either the NOS Race or Offroad formula will work just fine.

Here's a link to the Race formula for reference:

I should mention that I don't recommend running this stuff all the time since it has a tendency to build up over time.

Fiddle. Just drive it, don't do any mountain ranges on it, and don't panic. You're cold enough up there the car probably won't even mind.
Mixing low- and high-octane gas used to actually slightly boost the higher of the octane ratings. I don't know if that still applies.
I've made many runs in warm weather up the Sierra to Tahoe on regular gas with no ill effects. Regular gas actually contains more energy than "super", as it contains more gasoline and fewer additives. It also burns cleaner for this.

Don't sweat it. A pump screwed up on me once and gave me 85 octane. I dumped in a couple of the worthless octane boosters. Got shit mileage, but no ill effects. We have knock sensors for a reason.

I agree with defiant, Knock sensor should retard timing. I have run 87 before, turn the boost down if you have ebc or mbc.

K thanks alot for the replies made me feel better. I felt like puking when i heard him tell me that haha. So is it important to run the tank completely dry or should i just fill up premium when i need gas.?

No need to run it dry, that just messes with your pump, get it to about 1/16th on your guage, and then go fill up with 91 at the station, and dont sweat it. If you were running 20+psi Im sure you would drain it, but for stock levels I wouldnt worry about it with the octane booster in it.

Unless the one borrowing it has one :).

I let my ex-gf drive mine when I wasnt in the mood to drive, or if she wanted to go to the mall, she loved it, and I just told her to watch that she doesnt run it dry, that she puts ONLY 93 in it, make sure the temp guage doesnt go into the red, to check for fluids after parked for a little while, and not to crash it. I loved it she would always have it full giving it to me, and would show me the recite (sp?) that said "V-power" ( I only get gas at shell for it).

Should not run tank completely dry, will cause you to suck up things you don't want. When your at a 1/2 tank just put 91 in. Relax, 87 isn't a big deal, computer will adjust for change in octane. Merry Xmas

Speaking of ex-gf, back when I had the Dodge Diesel I let her take it for a day, and she filled up with gasoline instead of Diesel. She made it about a mile from the gas station and blew the motor. She called me crying and all upset (the usual, when a car breaks down) and I dug out the AAA card and had it towed. The mechanic said there is nothing that can be saved besides the block, head, and crank, the rest was toast. I was pissed, as it had some mods to make her smoke, as well as book it along and spank most trucks and cars in my area. $6200 for a new motor, I sold the truck as is for $1200, and bought my Dakota.
Moral of the story, don't let your g/f borrow cars and have them fill up with fuel, make sure they have enough to do their trip.
