Hey guys! I had a intro thread but I don't know where it went so this I guess is my first official thread.

I recently purchased a tdo5h 20g from hp, I haven't seen a lot of feedback with this particular turbo so I'm hoping to make this thread to take you guys along my experience.

The mods are updated in my profile, I will be going to the track and dyno within the next couple of weeks as I'm finishing the install this weekend.

Nice looking car. The thread will be most complete if you provide before and after the new turbo dyno and track numbers. Not just after.
 
Sorry guys, just sharing my experience with the turbo as I go along. Thanks for the compliments on the car!

I've seen only a few threads about it but there's not too many with dyno and track numbers, mostly a progress thread than anything.

You using the stock turbine housing? Mated to a t3 manifold?

I will be keeping it just as it came with with the T3 10cm housing, all I'm doing is clocking it and using a stock 2g mani with an adapter plate and a knockoff o2 housing from an eBay 20g

However, there needs to be some tech advice or questions regarding the turbo for this thread to stay open.....sooooo maybe you should *ahem* tell us about how you plan on wastegating this beast.

Haha thanks I'm gonna keep it internally gated using a holset wastegate actuator provided by the great jusmx141! Which he will make a bracket to make fit.

I've seen that thread before and it provides great information on how to mount the turbo and what housings to use, so I'd just like to add my experience with track and dyno numbers

Excellent. There are some threads here and there with 20G users making HP in the low 400's, but none are using the T3 10cm turbine housing to my knowledge...so it will be great to get some input from someone pushing one of these turbos to the limit.

Some words of wisdom- you may want to feed the turbo from the filter housing with a restrictor instead of the head....pushing a 20G will mean much greater thrust loads than the factory thrust system is designed for during normal operation. The filter housing feed may extend the life a little by offering a little more oil pressure for the thrust collar, but it's still a good idea to keep an eye on the in/out play of the turbo and get it rebuilt with an upgraded thrust plate and wider collar at the first sign of play before any wheel damage happens as I've seen even perfect-working 20G's develop thrust wear with filter housing oil feeds.

That is great news for me as my goal is 350-400whp, so hopefully I'll achieve it. I've also seen just SOME numbers scattered around but like you said most people used 7cm turbine housings.

How about for the return line of the oil? I have a fitting that matches the opening of the bottom return hole of the CHRA and one that is smaller, should I use the matching one for the return line?

The only problem i noticed with the t3 housing, is the outlet. It measured about 2".

That is true I was thinking about porting it due to my o2 housing having a 2.5" outlet

Yea the hta68 is nice but almost the same thing as the 20g as stated above, and not only it was more expensive but in my case I would have had to buy a j pipe and an evo3 o2 housing since I don't have the stock housing anymore.

Hey Justin,

Is that with any 20g or just FPs? I'm planning on feeding my blouch tdo5H 20g from the head. Since it's a mits turbo would the head be a perfect feed with stainless line?

You'll want to add a .075" restrictor somewhere in your line or you risk over-oiling the turbo. MHI turbos prefer 42-48psi of oil pressure MAX; unrestricted from the filter housing like that will definitely do damage...you may not see the effects right away, but something will happen at some point.

Not sure how much lower the 10cm housing and adapter plate will mount the turbo, but you could probably get away with using a 1G factory oil drain and a piece of 5/8" silicone hose in the center...just be sure the hose doesn't kink in any way.

why not just get a hta68?
Same center housing and guts (different compressor wheel), TD05H-style cover that would require the use of a j-pipe, and a $400-heavier price tag. No bueno.

I'd email Blouch and see what they recommend. If it's using the MHI cartridge (which I'm sure it does) you should definitely keep the oil pressure at the inlet below 50psi....the idea with the filter housing feed is the pressure would be a little higher while cruising and at low engine speeds and the oil would be cooler as well since it's basically coming directly from the oil cooler. Same as the O.P.- you would definitely need a restrictor if you're feeding from the filter housing.

It's not that the head is a bad place to source a 20G....it's just at some point the weight of the rotating assembly is going to overcome the amount of oil available for the thrust system. I had a customer who ran one of my 20G's fed at the head on his car for nearly a year at 22-23psi with no play....as soon as he turned the boost to 28psi the in/out play developed within a month. Obviously somewhere in there was the threshold.

Also I'll be driving the car before I get tuned for higher boost until I get the wastegate, with the restrictor would it starve also if I'm running 15psi until I turn up the boost?

Because everyone and their mom runs that turbo! There arent too many guys running a 20g anymore.. I installed mine about a month or so ago and feeding from the head. However, Im only pushing like 12 psi since I cant seem to figure out my boost leaks. :banghead: Soon though Ill have them figured out and install my 1000s and be turning up the boost.. Not at all. I've seen turbos that require more pressure than a 20G survive on a smaller restrictor....I think you'll be fine. :thumb:

Awesome, I went ahead and used the .067 restrictor then.

Turbo is installed and car is running took it for a spin and I get a 20psi spike and it holds at about 18, I'm using the same tune I had in the AEM from the previous knockoff 20g.

Car feels really good and pulls strong, it is a little bit laggy with the t3 housing though starts to build boost right aroung 3100rpm I'll look closer next time, and at what rpm it hits full boost. I have to take care of an exhaust leak right by the o2 housing and the downpipe and then I'll get it tuned again.
