I need to get my turbo rebuilt its the FP red 20g just wondering if a Holset turbo would be a better upgrade than the 20g I have a built Magnus 2.4l with top and bottom end built its at 480awhp currently, would it be better to go with the Holset or just get a rebuild the exhaust side of the turbo where the manifold meets the turbo the back two hole are messed the previous owner put smaller size bolts in and screwed the threads up.

The FP red isnt really a 20g..... but an HX35 will get you to 500HP and an HX40 will get you to 700... with supporting mods of course and the 7 blade compressor varients of both. the FP red if its the HTA is good for 600HP so id just get it rebuilt if i was you, shouldent cost too much.

What boost are you running? Any idea of the lb/min airflow you're getting?

For comparison, I am at 54lb/min on my 7 Blade HX-35 in a T3 housing on a stock 1G IM running 35 psi. I run 60% E-85 and see 35psi by 4k rpms with HKS 272s. I hit my peak airflow right around 5k and it holds til 8.5k no problems.

Wrong. It's a 20G with a different compressor, much like the Frank Level 1 thru 5 20G's are still considered to be a "20G".

Then it's not a 20g. 20g refers to the compressor wheel. If it doesn't have the 20g compressor wheel, it's not a 20g. Just because the franks still had the 20g "style" compressor cover does not make them still 20g's.

Doesn't 20G define what compressor wheel is on the turbo? So if its got a 60-1 wheel in it, how is it still a 20G?
^^
Right. It's not.

It is not a 20G. The Red uses an different compressor wheel, though both could still be considered 60 trim wheels..

Anyways. I would keep the FP Red, it can be rebuilt at a pretty cheap price, and you don't have to mess with oil restrictors and different sized oil drain lines.

If you have a good setup to complement the amount of air the turbo can flow, you should be capable of 550whp or more.

u could go with a holsett u would not be sorry plus it offers more power opportunitys hell that 2.4 would spool a 42 allday long. it really comes down to were u wanna spend the money

id like to see 600 awhp but i don't want to take the reliability of the engine. i think ill go with the rebuild and see what i can do with it, maybe make a hybrid turbo and get a retune and see where that gets me and then upgrade to a holset if Im not satisfied.

I believe he said intake and not exhaust...

my bad i have a Magnus Race Series Intake Manifold

If you end up going with a different turbo then I would not recommend a holset. It seems like they are hit or miss on high boost/power applications.

I recommend Borg Warner and Garrett. Forced Performance also has some great custom designs based off the Garret GT30 and GT35 turbos.

but its not REAAAALLLLY a 20G its a custom piece by FP. Sort of like why the FPred is good for 600 and the MHI 20G isnt.
Every old-school FP Red began life as a TD06H 20G.

It's a confusing mess for sure. Take a 14B and upgrade to a Small 16G compressor....and you now have a Small 16G which is in no way, shape, or form considered a 14B anymore. How about the FP 3065, which is a 35R compressor on a 30R turbine. So which is it- a 30R, or a 35R? :D

Well how comparable would a TD06H-25g be to a FP Red then?
