Im a newbie/lurker still so I cant post in any of the other threads on this.

Wow was I impressed though. Im still breaking in the motor though(almost stock 7bolt).
I heard some guy say that you wont even feel more power then the t25 until you get 20+ psi, and I now find that comment incredibly ridiculous, he must not know how to tune. Im only running 12psi, and it pulls quite a bit harder then the t-25 at 17psi. I got some work to do though. Im running a keydiver chip, but I can smell the exhaust and tell it is running rich. I need to fine tune with the afc. Im getting full spool at 3500, which I know can be improved with some work. I just can't wait to break the motor in and turn it up to 20.

Any comments or questions welcomed. Also please post your reviews here too.

Im surprised there are no comments on this. What can I do to get the spool time lower? Could it be a boost leak?

Also, please post any reviews you have on this turbo.

Yeah that could lower your spool since air is escaping through a leak as opposed to spinning the turbine (at least that's what it would lead me to think) definately do a boost leak test, get it tuned and comment on how much nicer it is! I'm also thinking about getting the 18g kit from FP, definately hearing good stuff from it. +1 to another person loving the 18g

I can do the test and stuff, but as far as testing it out, that wont happen. Too much snow, the roads are like ice. Last night I found like a 40yd stretch without snow or ice and used it. It snowed again though.

You can get a high flow manifold, upgrade intake, upgrade o2 housing, bigger exhaust, high flow cat/cat eliminator im not sure how your inspections are in your area but after all of that you will notice quite a power increas and you will hit full boost alot sooner.

Funny you should mention what you did about keydiver. I have keydiver as well, and my car runs perfect. I had the AFC on my car with slight adjustments, and decided to take it out because since I had it, 3 people tried to break into my car. Either way, with just the keydiver, and the AFC out, i didn't see much performance drop. I only have a 14b, soon to upgrade to a 50trim.

Keep us updated on the 18g, if I didn't find such a killer price on this 50trim, an 18g or 20g was going to be my next turbo, although most people says they wish they skipped that turbo and went directly to a 50trim or larger...good luck with it!

Can you guys please look at my profile before posting what I should get. Im not trying to be rude so sorry if it sounds like it.

I have the fp race manifold. My slower spool is really not to slow, and its not do to restrictions, its in my tune.

I pull 21 psi @ 3400 rpm in 3rd gear on my T28 with a FMIC. Your 3500 rpm on a 18g with a SMIC sounds very very reasonable. Maybe add another 200 rpm lag when you install a FMIC.

Forget about spool when your tuning, forget it. I concentrate on how fast the rpms rise, or whether I'm getting bogging or not, you can "hear" it. I totally ignore the boost gauge and use the tachometer for tuning. I typically add 5* WOT timing below 4000 rpm to help out the low/midrange. My car also likes to run very rich on the low end at WOT to eliminate bogging, then lean after the turbo hits full boost (>4000 rpm) for max power. At part throttle just make sure your 02 sensor is cycling properly.

Glad you like your turbo. Once you start running 21-24 psi on a turbo, you never wanna run lower. I couldn't even imagine running 12 psi anymore, even the difference between 20 and 24 psi is huge.

FP 16G 6SL2 Review

I have been running the FP 18G 6SL2 for about 4 months now. I upgraded from a ported 14b, so the difference in power was rather noticeable. However, when I did the turbo upgrade I also did a bunch of other stuff at the same time (FMIC, 650cc injectors, rewired Walbro190, evoIII exhaust manifold) so collectively the increase in HP has served to keep a dumb grin on my face every time I get on the throttle. The injectors and fuel pump seem to be a good match for this turbo, although in retrospect I probably should have just gone with the 255 fuel pump. I'm running 20 lbs of boost and it hits full on at around 3800 rpm give or take. I hope to get to a dyno in the spring to see some real numbers.

How does it feel at 20psi? Maybe you can time a 70-90mph pull? That would be cool.

Yeah that {boost leak} could lower your spool since air is escaping through a leak as opposed to spinning the turbine (at least that's what it would lead me to think)

If you have a boost leak, air that has already been compressed by the turbo is leaking to the atmosphere (or into the crankcase) instead of getting to the combustion cylinders. So the turbo could be spooling normally, but your engine doesn't see it. Depending on where the leaks are, it will affect your A/F ratio among other things.

Actual slow spool would more likely be caused by a pre-turbo exhaust leak, since it is the exaust gases that are actually driving the turbo compressor.

Both of these can cause the turbo to be overworked and pushed out of it's efficiency range and shorten the bearing life.

The proof for me that my $700.00 didn't get flushed down the toilet.

I am fairly impressed with everything about this turbo, from the spool time to it's capabilities.

Thats seriouslys impressive like I already said in your thread.

So I was wondering for any fp 18g users. Does your turbo seem sluggish til it fully spools up, and then all of a sudden puts you on your ass, becasue thats what mine does. Until it fully spools it doesnt pull to hard, then all of a sudden it just hits like a bomb went off.

Im impressed with the spool time also, just to let people know.

I got a closer look at spool time, and im spooling to 12psi in 4th at 3k, and 3300 in 3rd. Take in mind that it spools a whole lot faster after it hits about 10-12. It doesnt just keep climbing slow. SO spool time is good. In first you really dont notice much lag, because it is pretty tourqey. When you shift from 1st-2nd at full boost there is zero lag when going into second, its just continous power, no let off.. SO lag is not an issue with this turbo.

The main thing ive noticed with this turbo is the power all the way to redline. It seems to pull harder and harder the higher you get in the rpms.

Im running 12psi and it is slowly creeping to 14-15, but that is expected at only 12psi, I mean the who the hell runs 12psi, oh thats right I am for now.

I think an EBC would get you the instant 10-22 PSI that you seem to be looking for. It has to be the best because it keeps the wastegate shut UNTIL the boost is where you set it, right? When my wastegate line popped off, ( WTF ) I overboosted and it went from 10-22 PSI in the blink of an OMG eye. For some reason the WG actuator likes to 'ease' the WG open increasing spool time. I also noticed the car will not 'add' timing until the boost level is stabalized meaning boost, then pull. Even when I switch from WG to 13 PSI it takes more time for the ECU to catch up than for the boost to build. Its not much longer but noticeable. Its almost easier to drive around at WG than 13 PSI. But if I had the cash right now I would order up this turbo, intercooler, injectors, ECU, monster turbine 8cm^ housing, and ext. WG. I'm glad I ran into this positive review on the 18g.

on my FP 18g i started spool at 3200ish and hit 22lbs by 3600.
thats with a 2.3.

I'm just wondering, But isn't the reason that the FP 18G spool slower (opposed to the Evo 3 16g) because its a larger turbine slapped into a 16g housing? When I first started reasing about this turbo, I thought that was one of the goals that they were trying to accomplish. Please correct me if I am wrong.

I am looking into whether I want this turbo or an REAL Evo 3 16G. I need a replacement for my 14b so any insight would be nice. I have no other real mods except a cat-back.

The 18g-6SL2 means it is a 18g compressor with a TD06SL2 turbine. It uses a 7cm2 turbine housing. So to answer your question yes. It is 16g with better top-end, but slightly more turbo lag. OR it's a faster spooling 18g. Any way you want to look at it.

It is also a direct bolt for the 1g. Meaning, you don't need to change anything BUT the turbo. Not need to replace (or kink) oil/coolant lines. No need to put on a compatible exhaust manifold or O2 housing. Just slap it on and you're ready to go.

Of course, watch you boost levels as this sends more air in per psi.

We really need people that are using this turbo to post up some results.
Spool speed, 20PSI by what rpm, hp, 1/4 time. Also anyone running this thing 28psi + where it should be would be nice.
I couldn't find anything and I got my turbo for stupid cheap so no18g for me.
