We have a 99. DOHC motor. Yesterday on the way to work the tensioner pulleys bolt snapped and forced the timing belt to fall off but not before it dug into the plastic cover and sprayed fiber glass everywhere. Good thing was the bolt went into a bracket and not the motor. BUT now in order for the car to start you have to give it gas. When you let off it dies. While it is running it sounds like crap. Could the timing be off or in the little bit of time when the belt fell off could it have caused internal motor damage? Any input, advice etc would be greatly appreciated. TYIA!!

Yes they are interference motors bro. Did you retime the motor when installing the new belt and tensioner? Have you bothered to check the timing marks? Most likely bent some valves and will need a head rebuild and all new timing components! You need to check the timing marks and at this point do a compression test and leakdown test.

When we took the motor out to fix the pulley we noticed that all of the pulleys were replaced and the top 2 were previously marked so as to put it back in time. Guessing we are going to have to spend the $325 to rebuild the head.

Pull the valve cover and see if the valves are coming all the way up. If not then you probably bent them.

If everything is good, retime and try again

He just went to get a compression tester. With all the motor work we have been doing lately on multiple vehicles it isn't going to hurt to have one LOL. We literally have taken the motor out and put it back in at least 3 times so far. Now it's gotta be removed AGAIN.

Compression tester has shown that #1,#2 and #4 are firing. #3 is doing nothing at all. Any thoughts?? Collapsed piston/lifter or bent valves??

Is there any way to replace the head without removing the motor? Thing is a pain to remove and put back in

Problem I have with doing that is the timing belt has to come off. The timing cover is one piece from top to bottom. That's why I was asking if it could be taken off without being removed or me getting irritated and cutting a hole in the fender well LOL

If you remove the motor mount above the pulleys and use a floor jack to raise the engine things are easier to get to.

I should say things on the side of the motor are easier to get to. Being able to move the motor up or down will allow more clearance above or below the frame of the car.
