flywheel spinning but motor not cranking

I say either a broken key way or broken crank. Does it turn over fast and smooth or does the engine vibrate really bad when cranking it over?

Flywheel spins. Crazy i know it bolts to crank but it just spins. On front side i turn crank it turns over motor

Like one of the other posters mentioned to the OP 8 years ago, there are only a few things it can be if your flywheel is actually spinning and the front side of the motor isn't.

1. The flywheel ring gear has come loose from the flywheel itself and is just spinning on there leaving the motor behind. This is very unlikely.

2. You have broken your crankshaft somewhere between the flywheel and the accessory side. Also very unlikely unless the car suddenly blew up in the middle of running it hard.

3. There is an issue with the keyway, timing belt, accessory belt, or harmonic balancer that is allowing slip to occur. This is the most likely scenario and as you can see it was the Timing belt that went for the OP.

I'll throw in one more. Broken flywheel bolts. Is this a new/different flywheel than what was in the car before? What flywheel and what bolts are in the car?

The ring gear on the flywheel could have lost its lock on the flywheel, otherwise broken crank, or something else on the timing belt side.
