Cranking but not firing. Gauges dead.

I have a 92 TSi. It's been sitting for the most part almost 8 yrs. I did drop an engine in a few years ago and drove it very little. It has always fired right up... until now. It has been sitting for a few months. I jumped it and it cranks, but no attempt at firing. No fuel smell.

I also noticed that when the key is turned to 'on' position, NONE of my gauges move. I cannot remember in detail if the gauges moved before. It is possible that the fuel gauge isn't moving because fuel is very low... but NONE of them move at all. Do you know if this is normal?

I think the starting issue and the guage issue are related. What are your thoughts?

My first/main questions is this: When the key is turned to ON position (but not to cranking position), do the gauges (oil, gas, etc.) move? Also, does the check engine light come on?

Thanks !

This same thing happened to me once. One of my fuses blew under the hood. I think it was the one labeled "engine". Could be dif for a 1g though.

Fuses are good in engine compartment. Have not checked relays yet. I'm thinking it may also be the ECU gone baad. Thanks though. (I will recheck just to make sure)

Can someone check whether the gauges move in a 1st gen (preferably 92-94) upon key 'ON'.

Thanks.

I don't think my 1G gauges move when my key is on the "on" position. The only one I would think might move is the stock boost gauge. I'll have to double check when I go back out.

Yep, only the boost gauge moves(on mine at least). When my ECU blew it would crank and almost turn over then stop. No other gauges but my stock boost gauge moved. And my stock boost gauge would stay up in "boost" with the needle at the 14,like the ECU was guessing I had boost or something.
