Flex piece in downpipe?

How important is it to have a flex piece in your downpipe? What negative effects can come of not having one ?
 
I dont see why you would have a neg effect. I have solid sections of pipe from my headers to my cat i think the flex pipe just is nasty tends to leak.
 
It is a requirement to your exhaust, due to the engines direction in the engine bay, when you rev the motor, it will rock front to back, all front wheel or all wheel drive cars with the engine mounted in this direction, needs the flex pipe, without it you will break your exhaust.
cliff notes: very important, due not remove, and make sure any exhaust installed has it

If you have prothane mounts you really don't need it. My brother's car has had a solid downpipe with no flex for two years and he hasn't had any problems.

One I'm making myself. I'm making the whole system well obviously not the muffler or cat, but you know what I mean.
 
RRE has just the flex section if your going that route, personally I would keep it. Even with full prothanes, pop your hood and have some one activate your antilag or studder, you will see movement. True not as much as with the stock mounts. I wish I still had my friends 500hp dyno run. even with the prothane you see movement.

I have owned a car with a solid pipe before with no problems. In all likelyhood you'll be fine without it, but why take the risk? It does serve a purpose and without it you do increase the risk of exhaust problems. It's cheap and easy enough to include. I say use one.
 
When i made my turbo back exaust i did everythig except for the downpipe. I went to the local Tuffy and had them bent up a pipe and put a flange and the flex on the pipe it worked out great i went home and bolted it in.
 
There is no reason to run with out one. Just becasue it has been done doesn't mean it is the correct way to do it. I have never had a flex section leak or break of you are then your motor mounts are crap anyway and getting rid of it will just break more exhaust components down the road.
 
They do rot through in the rust belt faster than the rest of the system, but still, it's not that bad. I think the road salt soaks in some.
