Flat Black [Merged 2-9] paint painted finish

I painted my Galant flat black, nothing professional just spray paint. I tried the cheap Wal-mart stuff and it fades and wears off in a few months. I resprayed it with Krylon and it hasn't faded at all. I think you are referring to a professional paint job so I guess my situation doesn't really apply to what you are talking about.

What amount of prepwork went into this? My car needs like 10 gallons of bondo before it has any kind of paint so sanding will be very necessary. But for most people, how much work outside of painting is involved?
 
SCC had write up on their project STI that they flat blacked, it took them a few hours. They said owrk with one panel at a time and do not spray in a pattern. If all else fails maybe search SCC for their project STI (2 year back or so) and read up on that artical. BUT remember that if yo udecide to repaint your vehicle a little later you will need to sand off all the rattle can stuff, which depending on who does the prep work may add a little to the cost later in life. I was going to flat black my baby as well due to the amount of oxidation. Still contimplating the idea. But if I come across a few thousand then I would rather gloss black it. So I am waiting. People can laugh at the oxidation, I laugh at them for being behind me.

It took about 2-3 hours of sanding and that was about it. If you are going to use body filler, try to pound the dents out as much as possible to minimize the thickness of filler required. Make sure that you don't apply the filler to any area's that have paint. They have to be bare metal or it increases the chance of the filler cracking or even popping off.
 
I thought about the whole flat black thing, but in the end I just think it looks bad.

Like, it has that "cool" thing about it but it is a bit overplayed, and just doesn't look that good in the end. I would much rather have a good deep black or something similar.


My eclipse is fine, just needs a little rust removal in front of the right rear fender and a good buffing. My SVX is effed. Stupid previous owner took it to maaco and now it looks like hell.
 
Check out my profile. I don't have any full body pics, but I love the flat black, mine is just spray paint right now though. I am considering getting an actual paint job that color. Personal opinion, but I think it makes them look mean. I don't know what a stock one would look like, but i really like it with the kit!
 
What you see that makes a car look mean is called MATT BLACK, dont get confused with flat black and Matt black.

Matt black is paint and it isnt a crappy primer and the car comes out looking very nice.

A local painter told us that getting a car to look nice and even surface and its not easy, but if you just dont care and like what the ricers do just rattle can it.

Flat black looks OK too. But, yes, matt-black would be the preffered way. I think either way it looks mean. I mean, let's look at the back-ground of why this color is so cool on cars: Mad Max, The Road Warrior, Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome. I think that trilogy is what brings so much love for the flat-black look. So, if it's just flat-black out of a can, it still has that "old-busted, but still a bad-ass fast" look to it.

Just my opinion.
 
spray paint is awesome to paint a car...you can sand if you want it doesn't particularily matter, but make sure the car is clean first cause if you get sand and stuff under it it wont stick. do it in a garage or on a non windy day so it doesn't run or anything and you can actually get pretty awesome results. just take your time, paint in even strokes LtR and thin layers. i painted my old civic a few years ago and it took 6 cans...you'd probably want maybe 8-10 to do a good job, so you'd be looking at a 30 dollar paint job (rustoleum!).

also, you can take body panels off if you want or tape off the windows...or you can just shoot and use paint thinner or nail polish remover whichever you have and wipe it off the windows/lights/etc afterwards...seemed a lot easier to me.

also, i think matt black is just a different term for essentially the same thing...the only results on google is black paint in a spray can :rolleyes:

umm. MATTE black is ver similar to FLAT black. go to your paint store and look at paints. There super gloss, gloss, semi gloss, eggshell, matte, and flat. Just describes the glossiness (not a word?) of the paint.

Matte doesn't specify "actual paint" and you can buy "matte black" in spray paint as well.

A decent paintjob is a decent paintjob. If you're happy with the rattlecans then don't spend more on the same thing.
 
Matte black doesn't look as gray in direct sunlight.

whoa! I'd be to scared to do that to a pricey car like an NSX!
but i looove the flat black :)
though some people will just think your a bum... or your car is garbage. Geed sleeper colour i guess ;)
 
SCC also first did it to a 240sx. In my opinion it looked like garbage but the STi did turn out good i thought.
