General First startup and tuning

Hey guys kinda new to the dsm world but basically I bought a ‘97 gst a while back that had a “head gasket leak“ but didn’t start and had been sitting a while. While unsure of actual condition of the motor besides what the PO had said I went ahead and pulled the motor and decided To build it while it was out.

well I’m getting close to getting it all put back together and a little confused on the tuning aspect will be going with ecmlink. For the first start up will I need to have a base map tune or what? Also I see people also suggest to get a maf translator or speed density? It has the stock Maf and stock ecu. Basically I need help. I’m not sure where to go from here. Want to be sure before I get it all ready to drop it in and start it up and blow something after putting in all this work. I’m not in a huge hurry just want to do everything right. Any help appreciated! Tia

Also forgot to mention I do have a wideband, fuel pressure gauge, and Boost gauge with grimmspeed manual boost controller to be installed as well

The 2g base map will be fine to start with. You'll just need to adjust your injector settings and maf slider or ve table a little depending on if you're going maf or speed density. I'd suggest sticking to maf for now while you learn the ropes. Go speed density if you're going to have someone else tune the car. Speed density will perform better because there is no MAF acting as a physical restriction. SD also reacts better to boost leaks and broken intercooler piping. You can make it home easily if you popped an intercooler pipe off but with a MAF you could be stuck. These things tend to happen when your'e running 30-40psi.

Thanks man I appreciate it. If I go maf would I go ahead and set up the table for my injectors and everything or just leave it at base as well and then adjust it as I start to tune and adjust everything through link?

You would input the new injector deadtime and global values into the fuel tab prior to starting the car. Once the car is running you can then make changes to the maf comp or VE table to get airflow in line. You will then start dialing in the injector deadtime to get idle fuel trims perfect. After that you can start doing WOT and cruise adjustments.

Most times now days before I get idle perfect I will do a low boost pull to 5k rpm or so just to be sure injectors global settings are close. Otherwise you will end up retuning idle anyway if they where off once in boost. This is more for a SD car that would see way under or over 100 VE though.
