Hey everyone, need alittle bit of advice from the dsm community. Im currently in school and planning on doing the rebuild myself with the help of the shop teacher but i think first hand experience with a 4g63 is just as valuable. I found out i have bad rings and im getting blow by on the 4th (40%) and 3rd (36%) cylinders so im planning on doing as much as I can afford while im in there.
So i was thinking going with a stock 8.5:1 2nd gen piston setup for about 200 bucks since it comes with rings and locks and the standard Oem ring kit is 140 bucks for just the rings. Now ive heard that the 2nd gen pistons have issues connecting to 1st gen rods due to piston pin fitment, however ive heard of alot of people doing this. Does anyone know how to go about this? Oh, by the way the car is a 1990 Gsx. Alright, besides that was gonna swap the main and rod bearings and was thinking of going with clevite after i plastigage the journals and all that. Is clevite a good choice, or do most perfer something else? Also was considering removing the balance shaft but im not sure.. would i have to have anything like the crank or the dampiner rebalanced after something like that? Im kinda nervous because ive only messed around on shop cars and this car is my pride and joy and im just gonna rip it apart.. So any type of advice, recommendations, or whatever would be greatly appreciated :D

As far as the 2g psitons on 1g rods any machine shop can handle that. The parts just need to be resized a little to go together. By the time you but the pistons, rings, arp rod bolts, etc. it is not too much more to upgrade to forged internals. You might not be able to afford it but if you can it is well worth it. I would eliminate the balance shafts if you can. No reason not to. You will even see an increase in oil pressure if you reinstall new cam bearing so they plug off the oil holes to the balance shafts. Clevite bearings are great and so are ACL. If clevites are easier to find for you then run those.
