Ok so I started tearing into this motor because of low compression on 2 cylinders that got better with oil (rings). Time for my first major engine stuff. I'm doing timing belt, headgasket, rings and rod bearings. That was the plan anyways. Got the oil pan dropped and the pistons out. The rod bearings look a little beat up but need some more input on them seeing as how this is my first time looking. But then the fun stuff, below is a picture of what I found in the oil pan. Do you guys think this came from just the rods? The engine is in the car so I can't take the crank out. However, can I take off the main girdle just to look at that half of the bearings and if they look ok just bolt it back on? I feel like something could go wrong trying to put new main bearings in while the crank is in, unless it is necessary. Thanks for the help. Below are some pics. I also found some casting material down in the pan, interesting.

It almost looks like turbo journal bearings and possibly some other bearing (main/rod/balance shaft) material. The casting flash could be from anywhere inside the block, and may have contributed to the other metal in the pan.

Get us a pic of the bearings and journals. IMHO, id be doing a full teardown and rebuild, or at least a very thorough internal cleaning. I won't expect it to last long otherwise

Here are the rods journals and bearings. The crank has nothing that catches my nail when I run it across it, it is smooth. Im assuming I need to take off the girdle and look at that as well. The bearings are left to right in the pictures.

You are going to have to pull the block to install new rings properly anyway. The block has to be honed and then washed to get the honing grit out of the bores. It should actually be washed 2x, before, and after any machine work.

Some of the metal looks like the common t25 bearings in the oil pan issue.

How much power was this car making? The top halves of the rod bearings look pretty beat.

Ok so I bought the car a year and a half ago with a EVO3 16g and was running it on stock psi until the last few months where I have been running 20psi tuned for 0 knock. Maybe some of the shavings are from the last guy before he put in the 16g? But power wise maybe 300-330. I also measured the head thickness and it has never been decked so maybe it just hasnt had some TLC.

Took the girdle off. Pics are below. 1 is front case side 5 is next to flywheel. Nothing crazy here either. The only bearing that worried me is the last one (5). It has a nice groove in it. Here again, the crank is fine. No grooves or anything, a little better than the rod surfaces. Ill be replacing these bearings with the crank in now, might as well. It looks like I am good to go I guess. Still not sure where that stuff came from though...
