So I recently bought a GSX that ran and drove pretty good save for a bad transmission. I have since bought a new trans and decided that due to low compression numbers (115,135,135,150) That I would tear the head down, replace gaskets, and change piston rings. I have NOT pulled the block. I don't have the equipment to remove it. I have dropped the oil pan, removed pistons, removed the head, checked valves, checked pistons. Will be buying all new belts including the t-belt. Deleting the BS, and putting it all back together.

Now... I have NEVER been this deep in an engine, so for me this is balls deep. Here are my finds.

1 : Crank looks damned good
2 : Head looks fine. There was some buildup on the intake valves. I have sandpapered that off. No bent valves.
3 : Pistons look good. I have also buffed them. Now, I know they have four notches, 2 big, two smaller. But just below the factory dimples for my intake valves, there are small nicks where it looks like valves have kissed the pistons in the past. I can tell they are old nitches because they were packed for of carbon. I had to buff everything off of the piston it even really see them. (Note, when I drove the car I her no ticking and it ran damned good. I'm also pretty sure that this head is a rebuilt one.
4 : Rings are in terrible condition.
5 : Cylinder walls are nice and smooth. There isn't even a ridge in 3 walls, barely a ridge in one, it's more like a small bump at the very top near the apex of the piston.
6 : Block is dirty. No obvious cracks or holes. Will be degreasing and cleaning up.
7 : Headgasket was crap.

So here are my concerns/questions :

1 : When installing my rod bearings, what should I keep in mind to do it properly?
2 : The cylinders...should I hone them? And if so...can I reuse the pistons I have? I have .50 Pistons.. but I'm not looking to bore this block.
3 : When installing the pistons (I have them marked which cylinder they come out of) is there a correct way to do this to ensure correct angle and seat of the rings?
4 : When timing this engine... it's a 90'...is there an EASIER way to time it? I'll also be making sure the CAS advance is correct with a timing light.. but seriously... what's the best way to line up the CAMS and whatnot?

o.o Any other advice is appreciated, an no.. I haven't taken anything to a machine shop. I'm just looking to get this engine running stock with a few bolt ons. I have a .50 rebuilt Block with upgraded internals that I'll be working on over the next few months, so I'm not looking to dump more than I need to into this one. This engine will be used to get the GSX up and running strong.

OH!! I also have some ARPs... should I use them in this engine? They were used in another engine for about 2 months before the guy tore the engine back down because of a bad crank.

;D
