Alright guys so this is my first post here and I have a lot to learn.. A few years ago the head gasket warped on my GSX, we think(me and my dad, he's owned the car since new) that the turbo was putting too much pressure on the engine and it blew a seam on the head. This would allow air from the engine get into the coolant system and blow out all the coolant, thus overheating the car. Anyways now we are going to repair it and were wondering how easy it is to get to the turbo. Would it be any easier to replace if we have the head out already? The reason I am interested is that it still has the original turbo and it has almost 200k miles on it. If it is easier to replace with the head out I was wondering if this one would fit: Mitsubishi TD05 20G Turbocharger DSM EVO GSR VR4 : eBay Motors (item 200450616026 end time Mar-25-10 11:38:11 PDT) and if we would need any extra parts in order to fit it on. Also, the 20G is bigger than the stock turbo isn't it? How much horsepower do you think it could make(the original engine produces 210). Also, is there a risk of blowing the engine more easily if there is a bigger turbo? After the situation that landed this car in the side yard broken for 2 years I am sort of weary of turbo chargers. The car does run and we replaced the oil and battery yesterday so we don't have to jump it every time we want it to start.

:banghead: this has been beated to death time after time after time... just search ebay turbos and youll come up with pages and pages of threads.

Bottom line- ebay turbos = JUNK. You get what you pay for! $270... My friend made 454hp on a 20g last year. If you could make that kind of power on a 270 dollar ebay turbo everyone would have one.

I dont mean to be rude in any way but it makes sence. its a no name turbo knockoff from china or korea. Your opening yourself up for more problems with that thing.

Fix all of the maitenance issues, & buy yourself a 16g, youll make more power with a real 16g, then any wana-be ebay "20g" :banghead:
 
Look for a used 14b or 16g and you can get an install kit from many of the vendors. Just stay away from Slowboy Racing. It seems a lot of people are having issues with them these days.

There are a few 16g and 14b turbos on the classifieds here. I guarantee that you will have a better expierance using a mitsubishi heavy industries turbo than any ebay turbo.

The turbos are made by CX Racing. Check out the internet for reviews of CX racing turbos I don't know how good those turbos are.
 
Well the first thing I want to know is if it's easier to replace the turbo when the head is out. If it is just as easy to get to at any point in time I will just wait until the turbo that's in there stops working before I get a new one.
 
I would say leave the head on to get to the turbo. Have you popped the hood to see the engine bay yet? Once you get in there and look around you'll see what is and is not easy to get at. I'd say do some research on this site. There is a ton of useful info that would help you.
 
the turbo bolts to the exhaust manifold, down pipe, J pipe, Intake hose, oil/water line to head, and oil pan, so if you have the head off, chances are you'll probably have the turbo off. Just take of the exhaust manifold, drain from turbo, intake pipe, J pipe, and oil and water lines. It's not bad at all. If I missed something someone chime in.
 
It is probably just as easy to pull the turbo with the head on. I would think so anyways. I think it would actually be harder to pull the head off with the turbo and manifold still attached to it.
