Hey guys.. I'm in the middle of a rebuild and was thinking about dropping in some cams.. I know everyone swears by HKS but.. I am still considering my options.. FFWD Cams have a decent price.. I know they are reground and all but is it REALLY that huge of a deal? They look very appealing.. since my budget isn't Donald Trump big.. I want to get the L2

They say-
A SPECIAL NOTE ABOUT OUR CAMS: There has been some talk within forums and whatnot that these cams are "spray welded" or exhibit some other cheap crap done to them during the regrind process. These cams are NOT welded on and are just as hard on the outside as they are on the inside. The grinding process does not detract from its surface hardness. Period.

In fact, cams that have already been run for years and years (such as in regrinds), have proven themselves in longevity whereas the brand new stuff, might have manufacturing flaws within the casting or billet that will certainly rear its ugly head during useage.
------------
Also it comes with a full 1 year warranty..Sooo

Anyone have any experience with them?

i don't have personal experience from them but i've been on their site many times and they seem like they know what they're doing and that their not out there just to screw the customer over and make a quick $$ or two. although they are new (ffwdconnection), they seem to be pretty reputable.

We sell reground cam's all the time where I worked when I was in Iowa. If they can take a race v8 going in a circle for 25 minutes at 8k+ I don't see why these would be any different. The regrinding process is basically the same for all cam's. I wouldn't hesitate to buy a set of reground cam's if that is what I was looking for. And with a 1 year warrenty I would go for it. A lot of wear is going to happen in the first 2 minutes of running like all cam's so I don't see a problem with using them.

Well, unfortunately, I don't have any personal knowledge on the cams either, and in fact, will probably get a different brand, just because i've had my heart set on them. BUT. . . Darren at FFWD is a great guy, and i talk to him almost weekly. He's always there to help whether it has to do with his products, or general knowledge, so I pretty much trust him completely. I wouldn't discount them just because they're regrinds no matter who is selling them, BBCs have used regrinds forever, so... Go for em', and dyno before and after so that we can all get some knowledge on their power. :thumb:

i wouldnt want to cheap out on something if i ahve to open my engine up, whatever it is. i prefer hks but thats just my opinion.

I just got the DKS2's from FFWD and im dyin to put them in or atleast hear some feedback on them(dyno charts). I will have them in by spring..... :( too long...

One reason HKS cams are so expensive is because they have to come from Japan. Having somethins made here to compete with them will be cheaper in price. As others with experience have said, there is nothing wrong with regrinds.

This does not mean they are cheap in quality!

P.S. I keep hearing FFWD is new company. This is totally false. These guys have been selling race motors for a while. They were selling 2.3 stroker kits long before they were "cool". I see so much misinformation about them lately for some reason.

Well I am getting my cams in either today or tommorow, I orderd DKS 272`s I will be putting them in on thursday, I will let you guys know how they turno out I have 100% confidence that they will work perfect, they have been building DSM motors forever, ill let you guys know.

I have a set of darrens cams in my car and while I have never had experience with hks I am very happy with ffwd's cams. These are the same cams he put in his race motor in his car. Darren is acually a very good freind of mine and I can tell you if he did'nt firmly beleive in them, he wouldnt sell them. I think they are just as good as hks and you will save some coin in the process. And I agree about ffwd being a new shop. Darren has been doing this forever he's the guy who got me into them and that was five years ago. Oh yeah buddy if your reading this, my wallet says thanks  Justkidding I love my dsm, most days :D

Can these cams be dropped in like HKS cams, without any additional degreeing needed? Of course degreeing would only help, but it would be nice if you had the option to just drop them in right out of the box like you can with HKS cams.

I have my cams on but I cant give you guys feedback till monday night at the earliest, my subframe broke down the middle and I havnt had a day off to fix it yet untill tommorow but I did get a video clip at idle, this is with the afc richened +20% with the maft set for 550 injectors compensation which im running.

Heres the clip:

I put the cams on about 1k miles ago even took a 200 mile trip with them no problems with the cams "grinding flat" as people say and no sign of the lobes wearing at all. They pul alot harder in top end, feels very peeky like a type r but with the 4g63t torque its awsome i give them 2 thumbs up and a go for them so far!! this is all on stock side mount nd a 14b by the way, tunning wise i had to richen the mixture up a bit but that was no big deal... Hopefully others have the same experiance with the cams that im having they do the jb great and the power increase is very noticable 4k rpms and up.
Ryan

is there anything else that you had to do other than just put the cams in? did you have to adjust anything other than the fuel? so you just replace the cams, you dont have to measure anything?

Well I finally made up my mind and I'm going to go with the FFWD DKS 272's when I do my rebuild. I will let you guys know how they turn out. My brother in law is making room for me in his shop and I should be able to tow it down to Dayton and begin construction on my monster later this week (maybe saturday).. I'll keep ya posted on these cams

The only thing you have to do is shim the lifters but all you do is take them out put a little washer under them and put them back in and the "shims" are included, and i have stock springs and reatainers i treated them just like i would with hks 272`s.
Ryan

So whem you got your FFWD cams they came with those "shims"? I emailed Darren, and he said atleast you would need stiffer springs.

Well I figured since they "mirror" the hks 272 that I wouldnt have to worry about stiffer springs, I am running stock springs from my knowlege hks 272`s are fine with stock springs as long as your not revving past redline.

Them cams sound nice! Thats the only thing i dont like about my comp 200's, they dont lope like that at all...blah

FYI:

I have FFW's DKS 264/272's in my car. I didn't need the shims, or springs. The car runs great with them, and had a very noticable gain in mid-high rpms. I don't feel any loss in low end power at all. The idle is pretty clean, with very little fluxuation (like less than 100 rpm variance)... I didn't even have to adjust my idle.

I just installed a set of DKS2 cams. My car idles almost like stock with an occational stumble. It doesn't sound anything like the car above (although I like the way that car sounds). I lost some lowend but topend is awesome.

yea that video above its idleing at like 650-750 rpms it does that untill its all the way warmed up for some reason...
