Anyone got a thread to show me what i need and how to install a external wastegate? (with pictures) because all im getting on the search is how to with just words some pics. would be nice! =] and what would be the best way to shut the internal gate?:aha:

have you done the research on how to prep you turbo for an external wastegate?

your profile says that you have a evo3 16g. It has an internal wastegate. In the most simplest terms that needs to be removed and sealed up. The flapper within your turbo housing needs to be welded shut or removed and ported its all depending on where you are putting external your wastegate.

You have either place it on the exhaust manifold or on the o2 housing. If you search the forums there are write ups on the pros and cons and results of the external wastegate placement.

yeah i know i need to buy a new o2 housing for it and the external gate as well... and is it easier to weld the flapper or to romove it? and would an EVO III O2 HOUSING work for an external wastegate?

The reason there aren't pictures, is because it's so simple. But you need to have the turbo ready to go first.

O2 mount: your turbine side needs to be divided. Cut out the flapper door. Possibly port it to prevent any issues. Check out MAP and Punishment-racing for how they are setup and yes, they have pictures.

Manifold mounted: you CAN modify your stock manifold to fit an external. But you can also swap out to another cast manifold that was casted with the flange there. You can also go tubular but that may have heat and cracking issues.

I myself have a PR o2 setup and it is perfectly functional. Check out my gallery to see it.

oh alright im looking at punishment-racing.com and there o2 housing did you get yours with the wategate or just the o2 housing? what best for the price?

Talon/Eclipse Tial MVS 38mm wastegate / recirculated o2 housing package

punishment racing makes a o2 housing for external wastegates.

The welding is used for external wastegate on the manifold. The flapper opens so the exhaust can be released. With a wastegate with on the o2 housing means you have to remove the flapper and porting so that exhaust gases can pass through that part of the turbo housing. This allows it to pass through the wastegate on the o2 housing.

yeah i was looking at the Talon/Eclipse Stainless Steel Tial 38mm external wastegate recirculated o2 housing 2.5" and i think thats best becuase that the wastegate size i was going for. so instead of welding for this ima have to remove the flapper and porting?

Yes that is what you have to do I believe. Honestly just think about how the exhaust gases travel through your turbo. If you have an external wastegate on the o2 housing then it needs to travel through the flapper part to reach the wastegate. If the wastegate is on the manifold the flapper needs to be welded shut so it will pas through the wastegate on the manifold

Porting is not necessary but adviced, it will help with the high boost level and with the consistency on how you rcar functions.

yeah i know i have 1100 to spend and i saw that external wastegate was best to go for just didnt think that i need an o2 housing just to get it working.. but im learning

yes that is true when you think about it! i got to remove the flapper in order for the gas to get to the 02 housing. and i want to so im am able to hold in more boost to the redline

cool dude I wish I had that much to spend on my car. It sucks knowing how to modify your car and do the work yourself and not being able to due to money issues. Your profile is pretty vague so I am going to assume that you have the rest of the car stock.

With 1100, I would invest in a new exhaust system, and new intake. The more air you can feed into your engine the more power will result. Let you engine breath. Get a new filter and new intake piping. As far as the exhaust a nice 3 inch will be sufficient enough for you build. Apexi makes a pretty good exhaust.

The wastegate of you 16g should be good enough for the time being. There are other mods I believe that will help you out. for example you have a 2g, did you replace the BOV? the 2g ones leak a lot. First thing that should go.

My opinion, if I have 1100 I would buy ECMlink for my car, learn all about tuning and how to read logs from your car. It is a great part about learning how to tune your dsm. ECMlink doesnt cost 1100 maybe around 1000 if you are also getting a new EPROM ecu.

yeh i have been posting threads on my best way on spending the 1100 on my car. and yes i have come down to this. boost controller, fuel injectors, fuel pump, and someone gave me a link on downloading a PalmOS on my Laptop and i did just need to buy the cable.. but i need to learn how to read log and tune

and yeah i have replaced the bov with an hks and have a small front mount intercooler with an injen intake any else that could help air flow?

yeah i asked about the and alot of people recom. me to buy an tsudo n1 on ebay becuase they are just the same as all the other ones just paying more for the name.. i dont have an stock system the last owner but like an 2 inch max system so i need to replace...

Wrong. If you are running higher boost, the exhaust gases will not be going through the wastegate. It's for running low boost. If you try and run 10psi on a 35R, then you want as much flow as possible to prevent too much exhaust flow going into the exhaust turbine and creating higher then wanted boost pressure.

Honestly, a stock internal wastegate is fine for that. I ran my old e316g at 16psi and had no problem at all. Hell, I also hooked it up to the stock BCS and it never creeped either.

If you have $1100 to spend I would buy a bigger turbo that is set up for external wastegate such as a 50 trim or bigger. Then get a tial 38mm and dump tube and decide if you want it off the o2 or I did mine off the exhaust manifold but I welded my own dumptube and made it exit my front bumper and when I lived in Cali cops did not like that very much.
