So I finally got my car back from the body shop this weekend and I take it for a spin around the block only to notice a strange gurgle. It sounded like an exhaust leak and I pinpointed the location to my dump tube. I feel exhaust coming out of it even at idle. I have a Tial MVS, which worked perfectly in the past, mounted to my o2 housing. As far as I can tell, everything is still hooked up properly vacuum-wise (line tapped from one of my lower intercooler pipes to the bottom port of my boost controller, and one line from my wastegate to the side port of the boost controller). Like I said earlier, everything worked fine when I first installed it. Could it be due to sitting for so long in the body shop?

I honestly couldn't see that causing it to stick open, unless the body shop beat it.

Which I'm really hoping isn't the case. I'm stumped honestly, all the vacuum lines seem to be hooked up properly from when I installed everything last year. The only thing I was unsure of what to do with was the stock boost restrictor solenoid thing, but I just ended up leaving it intact, plugged one line and left the other to recirculate into my intake. I don't see that causing a problem suddenly because before the accident, everything worked fine.

I have a tial mvs also and having a sudden strange problem of all sudden only building 1 psi of boost after it was hitting 17 no problem. No boost leaks and no exhaust leaks, I'm leaning towards mine is stuck open too.

I don't even know if I can get into boost, I haven't tried. My slave cylinder is on its way out, so I took it easy. It's kind of hard driving with a floppy clutch pedal haha. I may take it for a spin later though, and I may send Tial an email, too, just to see if maybe they know why. My vacuum is sitting where it should though, right around 17-18.

Happened to a friend on his HKS wastegate, turns out it was a weld sputter stuck in between the wastegate piston leaving it open all the time. By the way, if anything for sitting too long it would stuck shut instead of stuck open.

Same thing with me, my vac is right where it's suppose to be but I can they boost, I tried everything besides tearing everything apart to remove it, but it seems it's my only option for when I get back home on Monday, it's either that or collapsed flex section on my downpipe...I hope LOL

Keep me posted on what you find when you tear it apart. I'm thinking I may do the same in May when I have some time after this semester is over. I boost somewhat normal though, which I found to be strange. Took it on the highway and got on it a little, hit 10 psi. I was only about half throttle too, I didn't want to push my luck and have something go wrong. It just sounds terrible driving around town, like constantly burping through a straw LOL.

Ok will do, I fly home in the a.m, might get at it right away and have some info posted by Tuesday

Your best bet is to take the mvs off and check for any issues. And honestly, its only 2 v-band clamps not very hard to take off to inspect. Maybe 5mins worth of work.

Its not that its a difficult task, the only issue is space, I seriously can barely get my hand in there let alone a socket . I dont know if my o2 housing was made wrong but I had to cut part of the stock fan off and bash in a different part of it just to get the wastegate to fit, one side is wedged up against the back of the fan and the top side is wedged up against the altinator.

Unfortunately, I won't be home for another 2 weeks because of school. Hopefully I'll be home and able to take a look at it during the Easter weekend. It's funny though, I completely agree with you on the space issue. Taking it off isn't the problem...getting to it is. I didn't need to bend or cut anything, but I still run both my stock fans to space is extremely limited. If there's one thing I learned from working on my DSM, its that nothing is a "5 minute job" haha

I unbolted my o2 from the downpipe today hoping that with the exhaust able to breathe out the o2 I can see if the flex section has collapsed. Still wont build any boost at all. Going to feed a garden hose down the downpipe to see if obstructed at all, but as of right now I am 100% baffled. wastgate is operating fine, no boost leaks, no pre turbo ehaust leaks. The only way I can get into boost is to not have a boost source going to the wastegate...I am completely lost on why I cannot build boost and have spent hrs of searching for reasons but everything I can find I have already covered...I'm ready to give up and sell the damn thing, I hope you can figure yours out when you get home, good luck-Gary

edit:and the only way I could test the wastegate was to pull the manifold and the turbo, and hook up the compressor and listen for the gate to open. I CANNOT get the gate off the o2 housing, took the vband clamps off, beat the piss out of the gate and it wont budge off the o2 housing, its almost as if it is welded onto it. Is there a trick or something I am missing to remove a vband wastegate?? Because mine is seriously stuck on the o2 housing...turbo and manifold are still off the car I'm tempted to take a video of how the gate is stuck on even with no clamps...

Alright so here's the update, I removed my o2 housing off the turbo (after pulling the mani and turbo out) and gave my gate a blast @ 25 psi from the compressor, the valve opened as it should, BUT, I turned the pressure on the compressor down to barely off 0 psi (basically 1 or 2 psi) and the valve STILL opens, so regardless of any psi my turbo was generating the wastegate was opening, so I am sure this is the reasoning of my "no boost" issue. I took the top of the gate off to check the springs, I have the 17.4 psi set up so should be 2 springs, one copper and one maroon I believe, I have a maroon but cant tell the color of the other as the paint pretty much is burnt off, both springs are extremely weak and can be compressed with basically no effort at all. Maybe excessive heat caused the springs to weaken? I don't know, but I am positive that this is what my issue was.

Sounds like you figured out what your problem was, hopefully some new springs will be able to correct everything. Was it hard to take apart the wastegate? When I eventually get home and take it off, I may need to open it up and see if this is my problem as well. Nothing should shoot out at me right? haha

It's pretty basic, like 6 little screws, nothing should shoot out at you, just hold on to the top when u take the last screw out, my springs were shot so I had 0 resistance, punishment is sending me new springs right away. I just took pics of the springs and emailed them to tial and punishment, tial emailed back right away and said they were shot, punishment got ahold of me the next day asking for my addy to send new springs, pretty happy with quick customer service on both ends!

That's good to hear! Did they charge you for the springs? I'm thinking I may email both companies as well, just to hear what they have to say. Next weekend can't come soon enough...I want to get this fixed LOL.

I pm tim on Facebook and asked him to email me an invoice and he said no worries I am sending you a variety of replacement springs free of charge, and that's even shipping to Canada! I would open it up and have a look at the diaphragm and the springs tho, it is not uncommon for the diaphragm to tear, and I think my springs just happened to be one of those rare defective pieces you come across, tial genuinely makes solid products.

Sounds good, I was on their site yesterday talking to customer service through that little AIM they have. They seem like genuine people who are willing to help. All they would need to do is fill out some paperwork. It's good to know there are still places with awesome customer service.

Just a follow up, I finally got home after a long haul of 12hr night shifts for 21 days straight, new springs that punishment sent were waiting, put the new springs in the gate, ported out my stock 2g manifold as I am certain the previous springs were severly heated due to the huge amount of heat that my tubular manifold was putting out, bolted the 57 trim and everything else back on and am boosting fine again, so in my case it was 100% wastegate spring failure. Kudos to Tim at punishment for sending me various replacement springs free of charge, excellent customer service like that got me back boosting again in no time, OP, hope you got your problem sorted out-Gary

I figured I'd update my situation as well. After getting home from school this semester and finally having the time to take my wastegate off and inspect it, I found that the problem was not the springs OR the diaphragm. It turns out the valve stem wasn't seated properly, thus causing a slight gap all around the bottom portion of the wastegate when it should have been completely sealed when closed. I took some pictures and sent them to both Tim at Punishment and Jake at TiAL. The people over at Punishment said that they couldn't do anything and I should contact TiAL (which I already did just to be safe). After some emails between Jake and I, he said to ship the wastegate back so they can have a look at it. After a few days, I received a brand new MVS in the mail with the same pressure spring and everything :D

One last question though, this new one has a few ports on the bottom for water. Do I need to plug them or take anything out if I'm not using them, or should I just bolt this guy on like my last one?

P.S.
the people over at TiAL definitely are a pleasure to deal with :hellyeah:
