Ok, so I came across a sweet deal on an external wastegate. I have a evo3 big16g ported, but still creeps badly. I want to run 18psi steady until I finish my built head and my car is a dd, so I do not want to chance it. My question is, would it be better to run it off the o2 housing, or mani. How exactly would it work? Do I need to weld the flapper shut, or just disconnect the hose to the wastegate, etc?

Well after searching, found it to be better mounted on the O2 housing, but would I still need to weld the flapper shut, take it off, etc?

You can mount it in either location, but if you can, mount it on the exhaust manifold, that way you can just disconnect the hose to the wastegate actuator and have the lever arm tac-welded so if one day you decide to sell the turbo, the next owner can easily have it grind off.

I am not worried about selling it at this point in time, unless this turbo dies, this turbo will still be on the car within the next couple years. Also I have a 3" turbo back, I can reroute the external back into the exhaust without it creeping correct?

Yes you can, just if you re-route it make sure it is angled to shoot as straight out instead of completely sideways as if it were to cause turbulence in the exhaust stream, i hope you understand what i'm saying LOL.

I had a small 16g setup with an external dump ebay SS housing (cost like $60) and did not have any boost creeps, ran at 17psi, 20psi, 25psi no issues. It was loud once WG opened up, but I liked it.

I know the dumped o2 route, but Id like to recirc it.

Ok, so to run it off the o2, I just need to take off the wastegate flapper, and port the wastegate hole as big as possible. So I can port the wastegate housing with the turbo still on the car correct? And use a air hose to blow out the shards?

If I am unable to do that, would my way still work? Never taken one apart before, and personally do not want to atm, as it is my dd, and don't need anything freaking up LOL. Would the way I stated work, as I do not see how metal shards can get into the engine if its in the exhaust side.

Ok another question. I chose to run the ag off the mani. Instead of welding the flapped on the turbo shut can i just cut off the wasegate tube on the o2 and weld a blockoff plate there? I don't really wanna mess with the rbo incase i choose to sell it laer

Yes i understand that but what about my o2 housing idea? I can weld it on te car correct? The welder shouldn't harm the car from the electricity correct?

Did some researching, and doing what I stated is the same as any other method. Thanks.

Ive had good luck running the external off the manifold and welding the flappers shut..... but this means your would need someone to fab your manifold and weld the internal gate flapper shut... if you know someone this can be a good deal.

currently running my setup like that, and also ran it on the 16g I had, works great as long as it's done right.

Just an update, I decided to weld on a flange onto the stock mani on the #1 runner. So far so good.

Here's a question for you guys! I'm going to run a 16G and i have an external setup with a 38mm Tial wastegate. I hate the sound of the wastegate opening and want to recirculate but i don't want to use the stock wastegate on the turbo due to boost creep issues. has anyone used a o2 housing that uses a 38mm external wastegate but recirculates the exhaust back into the exhaust system to keep it quiet?

^^^^ that's a link to the type of O2 housing i'm asking about^^^^

This is the one I use on my HX40

On the 16g unless you port the wastegate inlet you will still experience boost creep with the external gate off of the o2 housing. If you have it off the manifold you won't have the creep issues that I mentioned.

The inlet is a poor design that makes the turbine housing less restricting than the wastegate so it will creep until the pathway into the wastegate is smoothed out a lot.
