I am continuing the process of bringing my 91 Talon back to life after six years in storage. I have been working to diagnose the excessive oil consumption and I think I have narrowed it down to a leak in the turbo. Blow by is not bad for an engine of this age and oil loss is mostly noticeable under boost. There is smoke out the exhaust under high boost but no other time.

There is no noticeable play in the turbo shaft as felt through the intake. It spins freely.

Would these symptoms indicate a turbo seal leak?

Assuming I need to rebuild the turbo, I need help knowing which kit to buy.

The documents that came with the car say it has an HKS Sport Turbo. I have not been able to find out what this is. A call to HKS was not helpful as they told me they never made a turbo called that.

The housing is marked TD05. Looking in the intake hole I see a stepped wheel like the photos of a 16G. Will I have to dissemble the turbo to know if it is a Small or Big? I was hoping to order a repair kit before tearing down the car.

Yeah your turbo seals are bad. And if the turbo is the factory turbo then you have a 14b. I believe also the rebuild kits do not matter as to which exact turbo it is, I mean if its a 16g series the rebuild kits are the same. I dont know how the reviews are on the ebay rebuild kits but if you go to ebay and look up a 16g rebuild kit I believe all the seals are pretty universal. And dont forget to use new manifold/turbo studs! :D

Here you go. I found a kit that Im sure your turbo is listed. This kits expensive but its all authentic mitsubishi parts. Heres the link Turbo Repair Rebuild Kit Genuine MHI TD05 TD06 14G 16G 18G 20G Super Back | eBay

Thanks for the confirmation on the diagnosis.

I am pretty sure the turbo is not stock. I just don't know what turbo HKS was selling back in the early 90's.

These are the numbers I found on it: 49194-44301 below those numbers: 1430764

Thank you for the link to the serial numbers. The serial numbers on my turbo did not match any on the list. After searching for a few days I gave up. However, I was able to take apart the turbo to do some measurements and found through VFAQ.com that my turbo is a TD05H 16G small.
