I've been searching for the last hour, reading as much as I can about evo pistons...

From the main point it seems like everyone with a 1g is wanting info on them, but nobody for a 2g....

So to make my question short and simple will evo 8 or 9 pistons fit on 2g rods not 1g's.

Also, how are the pistons made: i.e. forged, ceremic coated, etc. etc.

The reason I'm wanting evo pistons is because I just picked up a 99 gsx for a fair price, it has the rods but no pistons.... But now I'm almost broke and trying to build up a budget 7 bolt and get it running til I can get a built 6 bolt in there...

BTW there seems to be quite a few evo piston/rod threads on here today......

Pin-offset please explain I'm sorry...

If it is nothing big then they are a direct drop in right?

Our pistons do not have the wrist pins located in the center of the piston. They are shifted 1mm towards the exhaust side of the piston. The Evo's pins are shifted 1mm to the intake side of the piston. If you want to know the reasons for the offset there are several articles online about pin offsets.

Both engines spin in the same direction, they are both offset the same. The valve relief's are swapped, but this doesn't seem to effect anything. There are numerous 1g's and 2g's that run Evo 8 pistons without any negative results. I know of 3 galantvr4.org members that have been running them for a couple years in 6 bolt engines.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with 2G pistons. They are a great 8:5:1 CR and are known to handle plenty of abuse. I used a 1G rod/2G piston motor in my 1G for 2 seasons at the track before I went to forged internals and I currently have a .020 set of 2G pistons in the 6 bolt that's in my 2G TSi that I daily drive. They are all you need for any mild-medium street car. True, they're not as exotic as saying you have EVO pistons in your motor but seriously who gives a rip. DSMs' aren't exotic LOL.

Save yourself some time and cash and just go with 2G pistons. If you want to get used (get new rings though) they're dirt cheap even free and if you want to buy new you're only looking at a couple hundred bucks. Sometimes it's good to just stick with what's been proven time and time again. Put your time and money into an area that really needs it. 2G pistons will do you just fine IMO.

Another option would be to just switch over to a 6 bolt at this point. If you're planning on keeping the car for any length of time you may as well because honestly I think the 6 bolt is the best upgrade for a 2G. I've found the best match for OEM motors is the 6 bolt block/crank/"big" rods with 2G pistons and then a ported 2G head but the 6 bolt head is good too and unported it flows better than the 2G head anyway (lots of debate on this topic) and you'll have to pay for machining if you want to stick the 2g head on the 6 bolt block.

Why would you keep the weak 2g rods if you where building the motor anyways??

Well I'm just trying to get the motor up and running as cheaply as possible, I do not have enough money for the 6-bolt swap.
My 91 seemed to kill my wallet so this will be a pure budget buildup....the cheaper the better, I'm planning on making this car a decent little build, but at this moment and time to get it running is my main thing.
I'm not saying 2g pistons are complete crap their a much better piston than 1g's of coarse but EVO pistons I've heard are forged which gives me a small bit of leway as compared to 2g's.

Planning on 12's for less the 1k when its running. IDC if it's a 12.9 or a 12.0, then I'll just work from there. I'll like to see what this small lil t-25 can handle...til I decide to upgrade it....

Exactly there forged so why put those on weak rods. I would upgrade the rods also. I remember when I found a set of evo pistons a long time ago I emailed slowboy and RRE. They both said they would not work because the valve reliefs where on the wrong side.

If you wanna budget just get a set of SCAT rods off eBay for like $275.00 shipped. They basically copied Eagle's design so you know they can hold up to 600hp and are way better than the stockers.

A completely stock setup is capable of running 12's. If your worried about the rods, just get the evo rods. The evo is a newer 7 bolt and comes with forged rods from the factory too.

If your just trying to get yourself a 12 second timeslip but be managable on the street, there's always nitrous. I saw a video on youtube of a guy running a T25 with a big shot of nitrous and hitting high 10's. That of course isn't common. Nor is it the path that most DSMers take. Most go with the expensive yet proven route of large turbo's. But since your trying to stay on a budget, you may as well give it some thought. Like everyone else around here says: Research, Research, Research.

Good luck.

So your saying that Evo VIII Rods and pistons will work in a 7 bolt motor??? I can get the rods and pistons right now for about 75 dollars with basically new rings on them >3000 miles

My machinist has sone a few evo piston 6-bolts and 7-bolts. You have to cut new relifes in the piston because they are backwards. But that turned out to only be one issue the pin offset is different too and can cause oil burning problems and compression loss.
