I'm trying to get my car running well since putting it all back together. I'll start the car and let it idle and it seems like timing is all over the place. There's a difference of 4-8* between the peaks and troughs on the signal. This is at idle mind you. Is this normal? I've never logged a car at idle so I'm unsure if it's to be expected or not.

Also, the car is running rich. It's got cams in it 272's that are not degreed yet. It'll run for a bit until the engine starts to get warm and then starts to backfire because it's so rich. I know the O2 sensor usually doesn't oscillate until it reaches 600+ degrees. However, what voltage should I be expecting when the engine is idling cold? Right now, even rich, DSMlink only reads about .2V or less.

I'm about at wits end with trying to get this thing to run right now. Thanks for any help.

The timing does bounce around. This is why we have to ground the timing to check it. Grounding the timing makes it not bounce around.

Post a log when the car is at idle and warmed up. I will tell you what I think of the o2 sensor.

This is normal when reading the mechanical timing off of a logger or dsmlink. The motor is in closed loop and you should see up to 30* while cruising. And like mentioned when checking the base timing with a timing light the timing ground wire must be grounded to shut the mechanical timing off and make it steady.
