I have a 1990 AWD Turbo Talon and i bought a lower mileage engine to swap into my car. Now the garage is telling me that they have the engine and everything esle bolted in and ready to get it back to me (finally) but they said the flywheel doesn't fit with the engine. :thumbdown

Whats wrong!!!!!

Do i need a different flywheel? If i do get a new flywheel will i need a new clutch too?
Did i get screwed over by the place i bought the engine from?
- the garage said that the oil housing was in a different place then my original engine

Any input would be helpful thanks!
ps i'm not a genius when it come to DSM's so if you could keep things as simple as possible that would be great!

If the engine is in the car... you need to remove the exhaust manifold and scrape the engine ID plate... get the letter/number combo off of that. If it is anything but 4G63... your starting over... sorry...

Ok i had that done and it is a 4G63, so i'm not completley screwd!
I'm taking pics this afternoon and will have them up for you guys tonight or tomorrow!
so maybe i can get this thing back on the road

Not all Hyudai parts are knock-offs. I work for Hyundai and buy alot of my parts through our parts department and everything I've ordered so far for my 4g63 has had a Mitsubishi emblem on it.

One of our mechanics had a 90 laser rst and had the valvecover. He was also going to put powered by hyundai on one of the side windows. :D He used to use their heads all the time, identical to the 1g heads and we could get them bare for $200 after our discount. :thumb:

Something is up with that crank, the new crank again photo shows the problem. It also doesn't have the alignment pin installed currently. I never saw you mention if the car came with a turbo on it or at least the turbo manifold. You may have gotten duped here.

get the VIN off the block and type it into carfax.com...that will tell you what car the block came from

Im going to have to agree. It might be an NA motor? Contact the company that sold it to you and ask them what it came off of. And like DevilSperm said, get the vin of the block and see whats up with it with carfax.

If it's an na motor its not a stock dsm 6 bolt nt block. Mine didn't look anything like that with the little spacer. That looks similar to the link posted earlier to the hyundai stuff.

If the yard or whoever removed intake/exhaust manifolds...

Right now I am almost positive he got a hyundai motor... and got jipped... because the internal parts ARE NOT hardened like the mitsu ones... Hyundai bought the rights to remake it, so the parts were not Mitsu ones, but identical to them save the nitrate process...

Yeah the crank does look like the one in the link from the hyundai http://beatingyou.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=90, but how comes the letter/number combo does have the 4g63 ID on the new engine ?

well the sonatas used a 2.0 4g63 and I can only assume that the blocks (which were probably still made by mitsu) came stamped 4g63.

I just did a 6 Bolt JDM swap on my 90 AWD and came accross a few problems.
1. Flywheel was hitting the inside of my tranny. Used the old flywheel of old engine. The problem was in the height not in bolt up.
2. Aluminum Oil Cooler/Oil Filter Connection...had to swap off the old engine.
3. A/C Compressor Bracket...swapped with old engine.
4. Intake Manifold...swapped with old engine.

Not sure if this helps....

Yes you have a raised flange crank.
Do not despair, at least now we know what the hell it is.

If you look through that link I posted, that guy found a company that made lightweight flywheel with the crank flange relief cut in it.
You can also start by spraying with penitrating oil and tapping LIGHTLY with a hammer while spraying. You simply want to work the fluid in the flange relief.
Then once it is worked in, take pliers/vise grips grab the fu(ker and wiggle side to side till it is out. Taking frequent breaks to spray more oil.

The other guy got it out, so can you.

Now glad I popped in and posted that link... ;)

Ok lets say that I can get this thing out and I can find the special flywheel that the guy in the link found and I get the flywheel on.
1. will i need a different clutch
2. is my old awd tranny going to work with what my new set up is?
or am I better of jut selling the engine and body seperate since i plan on selling my car over the summer.

I replied to the email...

That flywheel he found was at hyundaiperformance.com.
I have no clue if it will work with the AWD trans, my quess would be no.

If you have both engines, why no swap the cranks out. That would be easiest. Simply get new main bearings and then everything will transplant over.
The only issue you have is the crank, so to solve it swap it. Yes it's a pain.. but it will get the car running quicker...
