All threads with vague titles regarding engine bay noises are now merged HERE.

If you honestly feel we can diagnose an internal engine problem from a poor description or low-quality video / audio sample, give it a shot.

I own a 1997 gst spyder and there is a ticking noise comming fron the engine. It comes and goes and it mostly sounds bad at idle. I have 97,000 miles on it and i change the oil regularly. I changed it about 2000 miles ago I need help to fix the problem.

Hey bud:

Hrmmmmmmmm, is this a stock engine? I defiantly hear lifter tick.. But it also almost sounds like some piston slap.. Forged internals? Possible rod bearing(s). Take another video and step away from the engine then walk back towards it..

Easy check for rod bearings is to pull the spark plug cables one at a time. Engine will run rough, but if you pull one and the knock stops, its def bottom end.

Umm it is a stock engine no bores just resurfaced head new valves and valve seals umm ill take another video in the morning but the noise earlier when I turned it on was loud and then it was slowly dissapearing and it did when I made this video it kinda stopped knocking loud then started to knock loud again :/ plus it has 10-40 oil may be too thick?????

From your video it is hard to tell. Possible problems: rod bearings, piston slap, failed lifters. The first thing that I would do is drain the oil and filter it to check for brass looking material, then remove valve cover and check lifters. If you don't find anything there you may have to go deeper into the motor.

Ill be making another better video and I was planing on doing the draining and puttin in the 10-30 and doing the spark plug wire removal to see what happens like mrvict0r said hopefully its just a lifter or something and not something in the rods wich I kinda dought because the tick sounds on top like right under the valve cover next to the intake cam

Damn to be honest I took it to the major motor shop here in the valley they told me they where gonna cut off to the max and wount be able to cut again ### the head has been cut a few times already atleast 3 times that I know idk if the previous owner had more cuts but the head is cut at max right now I dint ask what was the final measurements :/ all I know is that they cut off .003mm I believe or .030? Im not sure but thwy told me something with a 3 thats for sure its been like 2 1/2 weeks sine they cut it so I cant remember and about the oil port mod no dint do that :/ I should of told the shop but I guess I wasent thinking right I have too many things to deal with college :/ so yeah and about the HLA's dont know what that stands for so im guessing I dint bleed them and the loud ticking noise only comes from.the corner where the oil cap is and its loud

Hey bud:

Start the car, let it come to temp. Pull one plug wire at a time. and see if any of the cyls stop knocking/wrapping. If they do its bottom end in that rod particular. Let us know!

Just bought a 97 gst. It has a loud knock from the motor. If it was a piston hitting a valve it wouldnt run would it? The timming looks to be about 2 teeth off would that make it hit. You can feel it if you put your hand on valve cover but its still loud it your down by oil pan. Thank you

Yeah your car will still run, your valves are already bent, don't start it up anymore, you don't want one to break or have the top of your pistons chewed up. Time to take the head off and rebuilt it.

Whatever that was doesnt sound good, time for a tear down can tell you much from there, gonna have to pull it apart. Ive torn my down a few times even now a rebuild not fun, no band aid for that one.

I drained the oil no flakes nothing put new oil 10-40 mobile 1 fully sintetic took lifters out and put them all in a cup of the same oil for about 2 hrs put everything bak and no more noise :) also one of the cam gears was a bit loose :/ so I made sure I tighten it real tight and now its all good just need to replace alternator

To me it sounds more like a lifter than a rod. But if you listen between 58 and 102 you hear a really ODD sound! Someone who knows more guide me in the right direction. I'll be dumping the oil and checking for flakes tomorrow and probably taking the valve cover off to see what's going on in there.

Lifter or rod? 4g63. - YouTube

Regardless I know this is gonna be no good...

bump..

It has some noisy lifters, but it also is rod knocking when you rev it up, so id say its time for a rebuild.

Lifter tick and rod knock...

By any chance did you change the clutch on the car?

I mention this because after I bolted on a new engine on one of my old turbo cars I did not tighten up one of the bolts that went from the flywheel to the torque converter and due to the bolt being loose the flywheel and TC would hit each other when revved and it sounded much like a rod knock.
Good luck

Hey is it possible that could be the crank moving laterally? When I have heard rod knock it was usually consistant once you rev it past a certain point but the OPs video I only heard it twice even though it was revved high like that maybe ten times. I would think a walking crank would be more random but don't know if it would make a sound like that. Just a thought still equally as bad. That sucks sorry man
