All threads with vague titles regarding engine bay noises are now merged HERE.

If you honestly feel we can diagnose an internal engine problem from a poor description or low-quality video / audio sample, give it a shot.

I own a 1997 gst spyder and there is a ticking noise comming fron the engine. It comes and goes and it mostly sounds bad at idle. I have 97,000 miles on it and i change the oil regularly. I changed it about 2000 miles ago I need help to fix the problem.

Thanks

You can check for rod knock by removing the plug wires one at a time. IF the knock stops you know what cylinder is bad.

If the knock continues after trying that on all the cylinders, it MAY be a main bearing.

There's so many things on the DSM that shake, rattle, tick, etc that it's difficult to really say what the problem is.

The first thing I would do would be an oil change. Then cut open the old filter and look for metal in the filter.

Got the pan off.Plenty of silver shavings.Yea the bearings were toast:

Will this motor work well assuming the pistons are swapped out?

Should fit fine with alittle modification. (Some cutting is need to make one motor mount fit but it isnt much and thats the hardest part im told)

Whenever i'm driving (less than 5% throttle or coasting) i dont hear anything. Whenever i give it some throttle (like 50% to WOT) i hear a noise from the motor that sounds like someone is doing "horse lips" impression. I think there's an exhaust leak between the exhaust manifold and the turbocharger. would that be the reason for the sound? also, would that cause sluggish performance (i.e. is it a boost leak)? For a stroker this thing is taking forever to build up any boost and also the blow off valve is nearly silent now.

what kinda bov it could be a weak spring and the bov is flapping up and down... do a blt and let us know.... btw thats the funniest description i have ever herd some one explain a noise...

p.s. fill in your profile with other mods than just 2.3 stroker

i think it will work just fine. Little mods but if you can tear a motor down you can cut and weld im sure. Good luck. If you need any other help let me know.

Hey guys Ok i have a serious problem.

I have looked up at other forums and I have a similar and previous problems that might have lead up to this.

I first had a problem like on this thread:
<object width="368" height="500" classid="clsid:D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000" id="SFID1252174640495"><param name="movie" value="http://videos.streetfire.net/flash/SPlayer.swf" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" /><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always" /><param name="wmode" value="transparent" /><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><param name="FlashVars" value="&video=d17b3394-dd18-4d81-9687-4e0386056ed5&servicecfg=386" /><embed src="http://videos.streetfire.net/flash/SPlayer.swf" flashvars="video=d17b3394-dd18-4d81-9687-4e0386056ed5&servicecfg=384" allowfullscreen="true" wmode="transparent" width="428" height="352" allowscriptaccess="always" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer" /><br/><a href="http://videos.streetfire.net/video/wierd-engine-noise-after_35657.htm">wierd engine noise after engine startup</a></object>
But then it just went away out of nowhere.

Then I was driving and I got this problem now:
YouTube - Engine Grinding Noise

It only grinds when I step on the gas, whether im in gear or neutral.
Second. I do have a sticky lifter, its not a rod knock I know the video can be a little deceiving.

Thank in advance for your help.

everything look fine.

I had a guy from desertdsm come over and he checked things over said it sounds like a bearing. We are gonna get into it this week and see if we can replace it. thanks for your help guys

Good luck. If it's a bearing then both the crank and rod needs to be machined/polished. Good time to throw in a set of forged rods/pistons.

Clutch pedal been kind of sticking to the floor?? This is common with 2gs. I wouldn't run it anymore or you might be finding a new block. The crank moves forward and eats through the thrust bearing and into the block. Take pics when you pull it apart.

Over the winter I did a bunch of mods and a wire tuck. I haven't really driven the car much because of problems. One problem has me stumped. When driving the car, it sometimes makes a loud, scrapping-like noise. It seems to come from the drivers side of the engine. It happens sometimes when I let out the clutch and under boost. I've checked to see if anything is scrapping and I can't find anything. Here's a list of the stuff I have done or replaced:

evo 3 turbo
fp race manifold
evo 3 o2 housing
rre downpipe in a high flow cat

6an fuel line to the rail
fuel labs filter
190 rewired

new axles
new hubs
ss clutch line, removed accumulator
wire tuck
new speed sensor
new power steering pump
timing belt job with new tensioners and pulleys

Here's a crappy video, you can here the noise at 0:08 and 0:30

Ok guys so I have a problem and it has me stumped. I have read all about lifter tick on the threads and what not but this is not the problem.
Today I replaced all the lifters in my car due to me seeming to have excessively loud lifter ticking. Now it's too loud to be rod knock and it doesn't sound anything like rod knock.
Anyhow we replaced the lifters with no help. 1G lifters I used. now we thought maybe spun rod bearing next. But first thing we did was use a extenstion to echo the sound better to our ear. Now we listened to cylinder 4 (passenger side to driver in order) with no ticking, 3 same, 2 same, and finally cylinder 1 the same. But as we got closer to the first cylinder it got louder. Now we listened to the intake manifold on every cylinder no lifter ticking. Exhaust side same story.
Got under the car and listened through the oil pan and it was the same. It was just the normal sound of the engine doing what it does best LOL. So we came to this conclusion it's not the lifters, it's not the rods or pistons, and it's not bent valves. Valves were just replaced about 30 miles ago or so.

compression test from passenger side to driver
4 3 2 1
155 155 160 160

Now to me that's not bad at all 120 would be low. So what is my problem? Has anyone ever heard loud noises coming from the idler pulley or the timing belt tensioner pulley? That is the last thing we can think of.

Oil pressure is good, compression is good, did a boost leak test and one leak now fixed the rest, car will start and idle fine, timing is good, and what not. Not sure if this helps but I am stumped any ideas would be appreciated. :hmm::thumb:
