All threads with vague titles regarding engine bay noises are now merged HERE.

If you honestly feel we can diagnose an internal engine problem from a poor description or low-quality video / audio sample, give it a shot.

I own a 1997 gst spyder and there is a ticking noise comming fron the engine. It comes and goes and it mostly sounds bad at idle. I have 97,000 miles on it and i change the oil regularly. I changed it about 2000 miles ago I need help to fix the problem.

Exactly what he said. Check your cv boots and all of your suspention componets. Something may even be rubbing in the rear subrame. Hope that helps!

so it doesnt make the sound when in neutral and revved.... does it make the sound when in neutral and idling??? then when you accel in any gear it sounds like a drum brake thats too tight???

Thats a tranny problem..throwout bearing usually, or could easily be the input shaft!

it doesn't make it wen in neutral and idling, only makes it as soon as I touch the throttle in any gear, I was only using the wheel bearing sound as a reference to what it sounds like, I knew it wasn't a wheel bearing.

the sound is coming from the front, its hard to tell if its coming from the center or the right side.

last time i had a noise like that it was my alternator going bad and the belt kept comming loose and buzzing when i accelerated.

well i was driving home when all the sudden i started hearing this weird almost grinding sound coming from my engine. i managed to get home and turn the car off. it almost sounded like the turbine in the turbo was rubbing on the housing causing the grinding sound but i have no clue. i did a compression test and it was 145 across the board.

i uploaded the video and it can be found here.
dsmtuners : engine noise and im scared

that is what my car sounds like. i never took it over 2500 rpms and it sounds like a dang lawnower. please help.

Thanks in advance for any help,
Bryce

Sounds more in the belt area. Take the dipstick out, put the handle end and press it to the ear and the other end on any part of the motor, including the turbo and I bet it's more of a belt related noise than anything since it's whines up with the throttle. Have you done a belt replacement yet? Take the top cover off and check this area out....you could have a WP doing it's thing as well.

Noise like that can be a number of things ....

good luck - DSM

I would agree that the noise is coming from the belt area. Ensure everything is tightened down, including your timing belt cover. It's possible something is rubbing up against one of your accessory belts.

well i just put a new head on about 350 miles ago. when i did this i replaced the water pump, p/s belt, and alt. belt. the timing belt looks brand new so i didnt replace it. i dont know if this has anything to do with it but i just bought a oem harmonic balancer b/c mine is chirping prtty bad. Any more ideas?

Bryce

Not the turbo, as the sound increases directly with rpm's. Did you bleed the lifters before you installed them?

Sorry about the small thread jack...isn't it also true if the lifters sit for a period of time (2 days is what I've heard, but mine have been sitting well over a month in the engine) after you've removed and reinstalled cams, they don't need to be bled?

That's just the thing, the car isn't apart anymore. It's all put together, going to be cranked over tomorrow around 7pm.

I'm about 80% sure you don't have to bleed once they've sat for a period of time.

Wisemen? Defiant? Mr.Boxx? :D

Lifter tick is from the tiny little oil holes in the side of the lifter being TOO tiny. The lifters aren't as well lubricated (not so much that it'll kill the car...just annoying) causing them to "tick."

Not bleeding the lifters can cause a multitude of other problems, but I haven't heard of lifter tick being associated with unbled lifters. Could be wrong tho, I'm one of those people who learns as they go. Feel free to educate me.

if you already have the car apart go ahead and bleed them. instead of ending up like me having to go back and ripping the whole thing apart just bc you skipped it.

How do you think he got the video with the car running?LOL

I agree, sounds like the lifters, quite possibly you bent a valve :shhh: if you didn't bleed the lifters.
When i started my car for the first time after putting in my 3g lifters it sounded somewhat similar, but this is normal and should go away soon.
In your case, time to rip off the valve cover and bleed those suckers out, they are quite strong when pumped up with oil.
When you bleed them make sure you get all the oil out, shake them when you think they're empty cause sometimes their not.
I don't know if you have the tool, but if you don't...you should get it, turns it into a <20 minute job taking them out + putting them in.DOHC Hydraulic Valve Lifter Removal Tool - Mitsubishi / Chrysler

When was your last oil change?
Unless he has like a 1/2 quart left in his engine I highly doubt that is the problem. I'd hope you would notice if you pissed out all your oil anyway.
