My engine mounts are pretty much broken and I need new ones.

Do you guys recommned OEM ones or aftermarket? Something like performance engine mounts that would hold the engine very stiff. Is it worth getting these performance ones?

And if so, what brands do you guys recommend?

thanks

Well it depends on what kind of ride you like. I hear prothane motor mount inserts are more for autoX and are really stiff.

I would go with Prothane motor mounts. They stiffen up the motor and don't really affect the way the car feels as far as vibration and whatnot. Unless you have your balance shafts removed. Then you will definately notice it. It also reduces the movement of the motor so stuff under the hood stays stationary and doesn't move around.

I've only replaced the one big one on the drivers side after the original disintegrated. I used a prothane replacement bushing, which was actually cheaper than a stock replacement. I could not tell a difference vibration, noise-wise but the big bang when I let out the clutch was gone.

I believe I got mine from prostreet.

Go to ebay and buy a full prothane motor mount kit, can be found for about $60. You will feel more vibration, but when you get over 250whp on a fwd you will start to experience wheel hop, the mounts help stop this a lot.

Energy Suspension is really good too. I have thier Hyper Flex and their MM kit, it does wonders. Now, putting them in is a pain in the a$$, but it is well worth it. These bushings will last longer than the car itself, ha ha, but I am serious, these are well worth money spent.... :talon:

how much of a pain is it? I can imagine that it could be rough...but whats all involved?

You have to have a hydraulic press to get one of them out, and you have to muscle them. Now, there are 2 different types of kits out there. Some say inserts, well, they really cover your old ones, and they have to be WHOLE, or somewhat whole. Now the ones I got, they have the metal sleeve, and the Poly disc inserts that you put over the sleeve, and then the end pieces go over them. Pop em in, torque em down, have fun... thats pretty much it. I will soon put together a piece on setting them up, pics and all. The hyper flex kit was even harder, lots more parts to push and pull...

Not true. There are other ways. I simply cut the rubber out of the middle, then made one cut through the metal ring, and then wiggled the ring out, prying slightly with a screwdriver. This process took me 15 min and costed nothing as I own a sawsall.

Yes I agree, its even harder to use a press. Just cut the rubber out and then cut into the metal ring. Ive also seen people use a blow torch to get the rubber out. A sawsall is the best tool to use.

The mount are well worth the money, especially if your 2wd.

When i did mine, i really didn't fell any extra vibration until I installed the one on the tranny side.

Yeah whatever, there are more than one ways to skin a cat. That is what I did, so it worked for me, and you used whatever worked for you. Dont go bashing me saying NOT TRUE!!! Well, tell me how did you cut through the metal sleeve? It even says on the directions, Excessive force may be used, but dont over do it.. I have Energy suspension, Prothane might have said something different, oh well. Like I said, use what you know.... :talon:

Well, if there are many ways to skin the cat, then why did you tell the thread starter that he has to have a hydraulic press?

It's the fact that you stated that a hydraulic press is a necessity. Now there are newbies out there driving around looking for a press because they think there is no other way. Meanwhile, they could be in the garage, getting the job done with the tools they already have.

You are free to use whichever method you prefer. But please don't tell others that your way is the only way.

I don't understand what you are questioning? You simply make one cut through the metal ring and it all but falls out. It is neither excessive, nor time consuming.

No, they are the same.

guys one last question, how will my ride quality be different? will it be more comfortable, less comfortable? etc...

I've done roughly a dozen sets. I used a hydraulic press on almost all of them. It takes longer, but it's easier. The last time I used a sawzall and just cut through the sleeve in two place and they fell out of the mount. It took a little more effort but I had all of the mounts removed in under 10 minutes. Either way it only takes a couple hours from start to finish. You will feel the engine vibrate more but it's not unbearable.

You wont lose any ride quality at all, just gain a little vibration in the steering wheel and motor. Since you are front wheel drive you will really want to do the upgrade. When you start to lay down some power you will start to get wheel hop, and if your mounts are bad your tires will be all over the road. My brother has stock mounts on an AWD 300whp and he has pretty bad wheel hop in the front. Just my .02

No, they are the same.

Some people just prefer the right way, others cut corners. I used it, it was easier than just using the tools I had. Plus on the Hyper Flex kit, you do NEED a hydraulic press, other wise you will be there all day in that GARAGE trying to muscle them out. I said there are more than one ways to skin a cat, so that means whatever method you prefer do it. WHat cut? I used a press, remember? This is why you started to badger me with petty stuff I had already cleared. See, even some of the other guys used a press, and it does make it easier. Whatever.... :|

Does anyone know if the inserts advertised for the 98 Eclipse FWD 2.0L are the same as the ones on the 2.4L engine in the Spyder? I need a rear mount and I'd hate to throw more good money away.

I'm going to be making/repairing mine. I bought a tube of 3M Window Weld fast set urethane for $11 at Advance Auto.

1) Remove motor mount
2) Clean motor mount thourghly
3) Fill mount with urethane
4) Allow to sit for 24 hours
5) Install mount
