I have a leak where the head meets the rest of the block right above the intake manifold. Is this a blown head gasket or do I need to replace the whole cylinder head? I have a 6 bolt block with a 7 bolt head. I bought it this way so I don't know how good of a job they did with this. I do know that they didn't port the holes for the valve cover and so the screw holes are usless. I've included some pics. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. (in the pic of the engine I put the screws in all the holes that weren't ported. Thanks.

What do you mean holes weren't ported? You're running a hyundai cover which will require longer bolts than stock. Other than that nothing else is needed. If your valve cover isn't bolted down the leak is likely from that, not the head gasket. Why do you have the long bolts on the interior holes also on top?

Which bolts did they use also because the 7 bolt head is 11mm and the 6 bolt is 12mm. I don't get why you're asking if it's a head gasket when we can't see it and you haven't done a pressure test and you didn't mention if it over heats or not. You should get a 6 bolt head, they're a lot better than the 7 bolt. Does it have ARP head studs? If so, they might just need to be tightened.

The holes in the middle are for the spark plug cover, not to mount the valve cover.

And your valve cover is leaking, thats where that oil is coming from. Get the proper cover or do whats needed to seal that one correctly.

1. That's the exhaust manifold you've pictured, not the intake manifold.
2. The cylinder head meets the block below both manifolds.
3. Your valve cover isn't even bolted down and your wondering why its leaking?

You may have to pick up a book and learn what an engine is.

I'm also curious about the statement about a 6 bolt head being better than a 7 bolt. Care to quantify that statement?
As stated above, head meets the block below the manifolds and your problem is above it. 10$ valve cover gassket, proper bolts, clean it up, all good.

i just put those screws there to indicate which holes didn't have screws. Does anybody know what length those screws have to be? yes I don't know too much about engines as of now, but thats why i'm here :thumb: you must be a really angry person LOL. And yeah I meant exhaust manifold sorry. I just got a boost leak tester and will check it out tomorrow. yes I do have ARP head studs. Thanks for the help guys!!

Valve cover gasket leak. And the bolts diameters are the same just the length is defferent. And to mnelson, the head bolts have nothing to do with this.

Wow, I was seeing it in my head as it leaking between the head and block since I couldn't load the pic on my phone. Sorry, I was going off his completely wrong statement. The bolt diameters aren't the same though, go look it up. the 6 bolt is 12mm and the 7 bolt is 11mm. You have to drill the holes out in the head and use the 6 bolt bolts. That's why I brought that up. I said that because of his terrible statement, we can tell he has no idea about anything to do with engines, and I couldn't view the picture.

6 bolt heads have better flow and blah blah blah than 7 bolts. Sorry, I'm exhausted and can't remember the exact details, but there are plenty of threads on here talking about it.

And I wish a valve cover gasket was only $10... Mine from Autozone was $30 :'(

So forget my statement about the head bolts, I thought you knew what you were talking about in your title/first post.

The guy isn't talking about the head bolt diameter, he is talking about the bolts that hold the valve cover in place. He said that they are the same diameter but different length, which is correct. The center bolts are shorter.
