St.Albert,
Just had a couple quick questions,

1. I was reading on the mega squirt forum and they recommend that you have a 160 deg or a 180 deg thermostat if you are running a turbo. Was looking for some further info on why i should have either of these.Or can i just go to a napa store for the thermo.

2. Also i am in the middle of my rebuild and am going turbo of coarse and with the 2.2L what is there for upgraded water pumps and which are recommended. Not wanting to spend an arm and a leg for a H2o pump but i would prefer the added cooling capabilities.

Ty...

Howell has both 160* and 180* thermostats for the 420a:

Usually you get either of these thermostats so that your engine runs cooler. As for the water pump, i dont know of any aftermarket water pumps that would be any better than your factory one, unless you wanted to upgrade to an electric water pump system. I haven't ever had any problems with the water pumps in our cars, why do you want a different water pump? why dont you just upgrade your radiator? Pumping the coolant throught the system faster isn't necessarily going to cool it any more....

Ok so i have my order from howell already on the way  Mabey i can catch them befor they send my engine kit, Because i am waiting on the crank before they send me the kit. As for my reason to change the pump was it was leaking like a civ before i pulled the motor and was wondering if i should just get the pump from chrysler or Napa. Also dose it really matter what temp my thermostat opens at since i went turbo?

more fire=more heat. by opening the thermostat sooner, and attempting to keep the car at a cooler level, when the temps do begin to spike during long hard runs under boost, it will have much farther to go before overheating.

like water in a pan, which will boil at 212 degrees. At 70 degrees, it will have to be warmed 142 degrees before it boils. if the water was at, say, 50 degrees, it will have to add 162 degrees before it reaches boiling point. This takes much longer.

Lower water temps give you a greater buffer.

Just for my own personal knowledge I have a question for you N/T tuners.

I know that the turbo ECU will not give full timing unless water temps are high enough (or it will pull some timing if it's too high). Does the N/T ECU do the same thing if you're running too hot or too cold?

Just wondering,

Andy

I would assume it does, Andy. Our ECUs use the cam position, crank position, O2, MAP and coolant temp sensor to determine how it runs things. When the coolant sensor takes a shit, the ECU runs the car like a dog. We have no control over ignition timing whatsoever, so I feel it's safe to say that the ECU does what it can, via timing, to keep things in check.
