Does anyone know where I can get a cooler thermostat for my 420A. My temp is currently running between 196 and 220 degrees. I would like it to be in the 170 - 190 range.

a thermostat is a thermostat... changing it wont change your engine temp... A different, possibly aluminum radiator and some water wetter will lower your temps.

uhh a lower temp termo will lower your coolent temps (damn i hate when people have no clue what they are talking about and try to give advice)

ok i would call an auto parts store and see what thermostats they have available for your car if they only have the stock replacement i would stick with it cause you live farther north than i do and in the winter you may have a colder running car if you put to low of a temp 1 in besides its not like you live in the south and have to wory about it over heating and if you are over heating i would change the thermostat and radiator cap cause they are the number one cause of overheating number 2 being low coolent :thumb:

Thanks for the advice and if you find a lower thermo let me know because I still would like to drop the temp. I don't drive the car after October anyways so I don't worry about the winters.

Boy, isn't that just the truth?

A thermostat is only for warming an engine up, and keeping it at an appropriate running temperature in weather cool enough to make the radiator "too" effective. A 170° thermostat in place of the factory spec of 195° will only open earlier in the drive cycle when starting from cold. It won't do anything about a failing water pump or a radiator that's lost its efficiency.

ok here goes a failing water pump would have absolutly nothing to do with overheating unless it locked up witch i personaly have never seen in fack i have only seen one fail to where the car was undrivable this was due to the impeller assembly separating from the housing caused by a defective bearring from the factory

a radiator also would have nothing to do with a car overheating unless the fins become pluged with debri and bugs preventing airflow or if it the engine has had a substantial horsepower increase

a thermostat regulates engine temps by opening at a predetermined setting each car has a differnt thermostat designed to open at a sertain temp just for that car

modern computer controled cars a designed to run between 180 to 210 degrees because at theese temps they produce less emmissions

if you lower the temp that your car runs at to mutch you could efect your drivability fuel economy and may fail emmisions tests so unless you live in a hot climate i see no advantage of putting in a lower temp thermostat trust me i know what i am talking about i have two years of auto schooling under my belt and lots of wrench time

just because you own a dsm dont make you a mechanic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

so only give advise if you know what you are talking about not if you think you do!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Or, as stated, a failing plastic impeller:

Or sludge and/or corrosion from earlier lack of maintenance clogging the coolant tubes on the inside, or coating them with a thin layer of insulating crud.

And once open, it's up to the rest of the cooling system: water circulation, coolant-to-water ratio, cleanliness of the water passages, and ability of the radiator to transfer heat to the passing airstream. A 170° thermostat won't make a 200° engine system run any cooler, it'll just open sooner. You can be sertain of it.

Good, now back it up with some thinking. Once the termostat opens, what does the water do?
just because you own a dsm dont make you a mechanic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
No, that came about from decades under hoods.
so only give advise if you know what you are talking about not if you think you do!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Jeeze, calm down, Beavis. It's just the web. Someone you know could read this, and see how foolish you get when you're wrong.

Whats funny is... Defiant is the man of these forums, the guy to go to for an answer to all problems... the man I would want responding to any thread I started b/c he has the answer or knows where to find it.

And this dude is saying he doesnt know anything. Wow. Props to Defiant for continuing to be "THE MAN". :thumb:

hey all i have to say is its your car and when i pass you by with my well maintained car while you set there broke down waiting on the tow truck cause you thought you knew everything its your dumb ass fault not mine.

www.hookedonphonics.com or 1800-ABCDEFG (That's 1800-222-3334).

Have a pleasant and fulfilling day!

And with that glorious sunshine moment, I think the original question has been answered. Thread locked.
