Does anyone know where I can get a cooler thermostat for my 420A. My temp is currently running between 196 and 220 degrees. I would like it to be in the 170 - 190 range.

uhh a lower temp termo will lower your coolent temps (damn i hate when people have no clue what they are talking about and try to give advice)Daedalus said:a thermostat is a thermostat... changing it wont change your engine temp... A different, possibly aluminum radiator and some water wetter will lower your temps.
Boy, isn't that just the truth?kaoticdeath said:uhh a lower temp termo will lower your coolent temps (damn i hate when people have no clue what they are talking about and try to give advice)

A thermostat is only for warming an engine up, and keeping it at an appropriate running temperature in weather cool enough to make the radiator "too" effective. A 170° thermostat in place of the factory spec of 195° will only open earlier in the drive cycle when starting from cold. It won't do anything about a failing water pump or a radiator that's lost its efficiency.

Or, as stated, a failing plastic impeller:kaoticdeath said:ok here goes a failing water pump would have absolutly nothing to do with overheating unless it locked up witch i personaly have never seen in fack i have only seen one fail to where the car was undrivable this was due to the impeller assembly separating from the housing caused by a defective bearring from the factory
Or sludge and/or corrosion from earlier lack of maintenance clogging the coolant tubes on the inside, or coating them with a thin layer of insulating crud.a radiator also would have nothing to do with a car overheating unless the fins become pluged with debri and bugs preventing airflow or if it the engine has had a substantial horsepower increase
And once open, it's up to the rest of the cooling system: water circulation, coolant-to-water ratio, cleanliness of the water passages, and ability of the radiator to transfer heat to the passing airstream. A 170° thermostat won't make a 200° engine system run any cooler, it'll just open sooner. You can be sertain of it.a thermostat regulates engine temps by opening at a predetermined setting each car has a differnt thermostat designed to open at a sertain temp just for that car
Good, now back it up with some thinking. Once the termostat opens, what does the water do?modern computer controled cars a designed to run between 180 to 210 degrees because at theese temps they produce less emmissions
if you lower the temp that your car runs at to mutch you could efect your drivability fuel economy and may fail emmisions tests so unless you live in a hot climate i see no advantage of putting in a lower temp thermostat trust me i know what i am talking about i have two years of auto schooling under my belt and lots of wrench time
just because you own a dsm dont make you a mechanic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!No, that came about from decades under hoods.Jeeze, calm down, Beavis. It's just the web. Someone you know could read this, and see how foolish you get when you're wrong.so only give advise if you know what you are talking about not if you think you do!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
