engine code? what does it mean??

my check engine light came on and my buddy read the code with his scanner, it said i had fuel trim malfunction on bank 1, and also cylynder 4 was misfiring . also ive been haveing a problem with my car shooting out a puff of smoke when im slowing down to stop. i ahve just rebuilt the motor (stock) and it has about 3k mile on it since . just wondering what the code means and how to fix it and why the smoke??

If you have a chilton's or some type of manual, it should give what your problem(s) is and probable causes for that problem. I also searched "fuel trim malfunction" and found a couple possibly helpful threads. I'm not sure of what your experiencing exactly.

I actually looked it up in my Chiltons and it dosn't give any possible cures. It only does that for the 1g's.

Believe it or not, your misfire is probably causing your fuel trim code. Fix the misfire first, worry about fuel code second. The ECU is probably just freaking out from the extra fuel the o2 sensor is seeing.
