That stuff doesn't have crap on Simple Green and hot water.

Im pretty close to buying a 96 talon tsi. Just awaiting the loan. One problem with it is how dirty the engine bay is. Its pretty damn filthy. It definetly needs a cleaning. My question is aside from the intake filter what things need to be covered up as I spray it all down?

Cover the filter and battery with bags and then spray the hell out of your bay with engine cleaner. It is all you should do because if you do any work on your car the tire cleaner is a bi***.

I used the tire cleaner on it before I put my current setup in and it was a greaseball mess.:thumbdown

The Engine Bright cleaner smelled like Kerosene! .. worked ok, I'm gonna have to spray some on a rag and rub the dirty spots, it did eat the greezy gunk crap that leaked out of my valve cover gasket (cough, time to replace that gasket! DOH :barf:

anyhow, the fun part of cleaning your engine is getting that crap on the manifold, then driving to burgerking and having people tell you your cars on fire, while your standing infront of it (LOL, it's fun to pretend)

The best stuff i have used to clean my engine was automotive simple green. You can get it at most any auto parts store, it's pretty cheep. The best part is it is biodegradable.

simple green works pretty good, ive been using wd-40, i bought a big can and a spray bottle and spraying it down, whipping the grease off and spraying another coat... works good and leaves a nice shine ;) makes all the old black dirty cables shine again like almost brandnew. just make sure its dry before u start your engine (my eninge is out of the car so i really dont have to worry)

Hey guys, I have a white 2G, and ever since I've bought it, the engine bay has been kinda dirty, namely around the strut area. I've tried numerious things, including engine degreaser, and nothing seems to really get it clean, I mean CLEAN. Any help or suggestions? I want the area to be pure cleanliness with no dirt/oil stains.

Engine degreaser must have cleaned it to some extent... You can always try gettiing it steam cleaned at a shop.

You guys are going to kill me but I had the same problem and cleaned it. I'm in Boston now and won't be back to my house ( Toronto)untill Dec 10 and for the life of me I can't remember the name of the product. E mail me and when I get back I will foward the info. I know what your talking about I have a white Talon and there is a tabco like resido on the paint.

when ever my engine bay is dirty, i spray it with the automotive simple green. it takes all the oil away. just be carefull of all the wires, dont get them wet, and do not start your car untill all the water is dried. after i hose it down i usually get a rag and dry all the water up then give i an hour to dry more untill i let the car run for a while.

actually wd-40 can be used if the engine is wet, it disperses (or absorbs?) the water so it goes away. :thumb:

i think what im going to do is either send it out to be steam cleaned, or what ill more than likely do is cover anything electrical, and then my air box, then take a spray bottle with water, then another with degreaser, or cleaner, go over everything with the cleaner, then the water, then use an airgun to blow everything dry, then repeat as nessisary till it becomes nice :thumb:

Here's what u can do, get some ziploc baggies or something plastic and some rubber bands, cover everything electrical or important. take the simple green spray, spray the entire engine bay down with it, let it soak in for about 5 -10 mins. then get the hose with or without the spray nozzel and wash it all off. if u have to go back and use the simple green and a scrub brush, then hose it off again. then take some Miguares Rubber and Vinyl proctectent and protect and shine things.

this is my engine bay i cleaned up one day withthe simple green and the miguares. i didnt use the hose becuz it wasnt that dirty.
