I used some Brakleen (brake cleaner). The crap just ran right off the engine and onto my garage floor :thumb:

One thing that really gets me is when i see a nice car with a really dusty engine bay that is one part of my car that is always the cleanist please people keep em clean use armor all on all you plastics and wax all the paint even the underside of your hood and a tip use your moms old makeup brushes to dust those hard to reach areas.

i work at a detail shop and we use an all purpose degreaser, then just wipe it off w/ a mit or rag or what ever

fatty

there was just an awesome post, tire cleaner foam. spray, five minutes, spray down.

brake cleaner = eating rubber hoses.

simple green, lotsa muscle work but kicks ass.

search for it in nonperformance

degreaser to clean, tire foam to make shiney and greasy

Go tire foam. I have seen tons of engines cleaned this way and it is the simplest way to clean it with minimal work. Tape over things you dont want wet and mist if over. It makes the engine look completely imacculate. :thumb:

Brake and parts cleaner. Pressurized hot water. Steam...

Brake and parts cleaner will eat away at rubber hoses and make plastic connectors brittle. I use off the shelf engine degreaser and coat the inside off all electrical under hood connectors with lithium grease.

To prevent corrosion and water damage to any electrical connections. After that i use simple green to give everything i nice shiny finish. pressurized water is the last thing you want to shoot on your motor. A light mist of water should be used to softly rinse the chemical cleaner away.

The can of brake cleaner says 'do not use on rubber, plastic and painted surfaces'. I thought the instructions on the can would be enough for most people? Protect your shit from overspray too. It's very good for exhaust manifolds, engine blocks, etc... (unpainted metal parts).

Hot water and steam works very very well. I don't like chemicals all over my engine bay.

Good call

However last time I looked into my engine bay. There was very large amounts of rubber plastic and painted surfaces. Seems silly to use a product. That is not recommended for use on most of the surfaces found in the engine bay. That one would want to clean.

It's very good for exhaust manifolds, engine blocks, etc...

Most times the exhaust manifold is covered by a heat shield. If exposed the heat generated by the exhaust will burn away any visible dirt and grime. Cleaning the block is a tad difficult with the motor in the car. Its doubtful that anyone would care about cleaning the block. When cleaning the engine bay since its not very visible. At least not in my car.

I work for a detail shop also and here is the exact process that we do to make engines shiny as hell. and clean as hell also.

1) Get a spray bottle or something that will spray out degreaser, and put just about any degreaser that you can think of in there. we use a degreaser called "hot stuff" works perfect.

2)Spray degreaser all over everything be carefull not to get in on the paint cause sometimes it will leave streaks down the side if you let it sit for too long. get a brush so you can get places that seem to have grease build up like on the sides of your engine bay and where the bumper bolts up by the radiator. let it sit for 30-60 seconds.

3) Get a pressure washer, and go at it, hit just about everything in there and look arround to make sure there is no visible grease or grime, nothing.

4) let it sit for a bit while the water is drying off. and wipe off surfaces that have excess water sitting on them.

5) Get some armor all or your favorite tire dressing, thats what we just use but im sure anything that shines rubber would work. spray it all over everything and let it sit for like 30 minutes to saturate into everything.

6) go back after that 30 min and wipe up all the extra shit that hasnt saturated itself into plastic and what not and wallah you have a nice cleaner then factory engine bay.

•make sure engine bay is hot.1 bottles of foamy gunk...2 if its REALLY dirty. spray the whole bottle on the engine bay.
•let is sit for about 5-10 minutes and spray away with hot water.
• put tire foam all over the engine bay and wipe away with a lent less rag.
THE END
