engine cleaning question... [Merged 2-7] engine bay washing

There was a post on this exact thing the other day but anyways, here we go.

Ok well first of all, you need to take a plastic bag and cover up your air filter as much as possible. Spose you could cover up other sutff as well but i only cover up that.
Let your engine be fairly cool. THen spray GUNK or another degresser you want. Let it sit for about 15 min or so and then hose it down. It might not be all off so repeat as needed. Then when you get it clean enough, let it dry and it will look really dull. So get some Tire Foam and cover everything. Dont be afraid just do it. Then when it all turns to liquid or clear(non-foam) then turn your engine on and let it dry like that. It will smoke and steam and w/e but dont be alarmed, it is ok.

Me and my friend have done this many times to our cars and it works great. And i spose afterwards you could go and shine up with some Mothers or something but usually the Tire Foam does the trick.

awesome advice SPANKS for the info

I work @ sherwin williams and we sell a safety solvent that can be used to clean electrical parts cuz its non conductive! It works sick for the parts you afraid to hose, ie ecu around the spark plug wires and sensors and crap, if your going that extream!

dont u have to worry about all the electrical wiring and stuff like alternators/battery etc etc?

hey i was wondering af anyone had any ways they clean off there engine at home or what products i should use. because im thinking about doing this to add alittle something to under the hood without having to pay 75 dollars at a dealership. any suggestions would help.. :talon:

I haven't cleaned mine in a long time...... Maybe that because It's in a million pieces right now LOL  Anyways, when I do clean mine I would just use Diluted (sp) simple green. Spray it all over under the hood (except electrical; use common sense) and then close the hood, have a smoke, take a crap, wash the car whatever... basically let it chill for 7-10 min. Then hose the bad boy off. I always put a couple of rags over the coil pack. I take off the plastic plug wire cover and stuff rags under there then put it back on with one bolt. When I hose the car off I do it while the engine is running so if something does happen I'll know right away. Try not to spray directly on the alternator. After you rinse everything off dry any standing puddles of water. (or use and air compressor, leaf blower ect.) Then spray everything under the hood down with armoral TIRE FOAM. Or sometimes I use Pledge furniture polish. I spray down EVERYTHING with the stuff. Let it soak in for a few, then wipe down the main hoses that you can see and the shock towers. I guarantee that your engine compartment will look 110% better. :thumb:

Thanks,
Dustin :talon:

P.S. If you drive on dirt roads very often... DO NOT use tire foam. All the dust will stick to that shit like no other! On the street though, what little dust that sticks to it will come right off the next time you clean it with simple green. (the dust sticks to tire foam; and simple green strips off the tire foam  )

this weekend im cleaning my enigne and i was wondering if that simple green or whatever its called eats away or damages paint and also i was curious is this an easy one man job or should i have some friends over to help. thx

i would toss the simple green and get a can of the GUNK brand foam engine cleaner, its the best. just make sure you cover your battery and sparks wires and all that stuff then go to town on the engine bay!

Dude your guys advice was awesome, i got the degreaser and the tire foam like yall said. I didnt use the degreaser yet cuz i just washed my car yesterday and didnt want to wash it again after spraying down the engine bay. But i did wipe it down then tirefoam everything basicly and wiped it all down and wow its amazing, looks like new, thanks every one and take a peek. :thumb:

What I do is cover up my K&N, and altenator with plastic grocery bags. After wiping off as much dust as i can (intake, radiator hoses, various hoses, intake mani, all the easy parts) I will take a garden hose with a hand sprayer attached, and just carefully go from point to point under the hood, not spraying at full blast and staying away from major electrical areas (battery, injectors, even my altenator while its still covered) After that, i wipe down everything with a clean towel, and use a shopvac to blow all the remaining water away (while keeping things covered and keeping the shopvac a safe distance from parts) Once everything is dry, i use some Armorall stuff in a yellow bottle (cant remember the name), it works wonders. I havent tried tire foam yet, instead of spraying the tire foam on the engine direct, spray it on a hand towel and wipe away! Once its clean it is wise to just keep up on it, that way you dont have to devote an entire day to cleaning. Just 15 mins to perty her up ;)

hey guys i was wondering...

You'll notice on just about every first generation (and a few second gens) that the black plastic has turned a little white from oxidation. Those of us who like to spend time under the hood usually want it to be a little presentable. Well, there are a lot of ways to clean the metal parts (paint, polish, media blast, etc.). As for the plastic stuff, it might be as simple as using a plastic and vinyl protectant.

I've used "Black Magic Professional Protectant"* on just about all of my vacuum lines, plastic wire looms/covers and black plastic covers. I don't like to use it inside the car because it's kinda greasy, but it seems to work better under the hood than Armor All. Just don't hose your engine bay down with the stuff. I've done that in the past and it looked great. However, it was mainly dumb luck that kept it from seeping into any important sensors. Use a rag to apply it and wipe parts clean. If you put it on things like your spark plug cover, timing belt cover (if black) and then run the engine at operating temperature for about 15 minutes or so, it gets "baked" onto it. You can then wipe off any excess. Everything should now have that new plastic luster again and you won't have to worry about too much dirt or dust clinging to it.

In some cases, you'll find that there are parts that will still have that white chalky oxidation that can't be removed with just the protectant. When this happens, grab your bag of steel wool and go to work. Yes, that's right, steel wool on plastic. It's ok. I use the "fine" wool. While working, use a spray bottle with water to pre-soak the part and keep the surface wet while using the wool. Oh, and I wouldn't suggest using it on anything with writing or paint on it, such as the relay covers, just to be safe. It is a an abrasive. Once you've cleared the oxidation, brush away any pieces of wool left in the bay. They are steel particles after all and WILL rust when they get wet.

Speaking of plastic parts with writing or other paint on them, I've had good luck using "Simple Green" to clean any old grease or other discoloration from them without causing harm. After you've finished cleaning everything up, make sure to go over it again with the plastic/vinyl protectant, warm the engine, and then wipe away the excess. Finally, take a shower and give your girlfriend a call, 'cause you won't be masturbating after all that work. :laser:

*(printed on front of bottle) "Contains petroleum distillates. Combustible.". In other words, use at your own risk. For what it's worth, I think the risk is minimal. It's not f___in' Kerosene.
