I could really use some ideas and help on how to clean up my engine bay and get it looking nicer. It drives me nuts seeing it like this. I have to stay emissions compliant as well, so please keep that in mind.

Just start re routing wires, so that way they arent all so scattered around, either that or group them and tuck them in wire loom, you can get that cheap at autozone. Also just take you time stand back and look, see what just looks bad and move it so it looks like it is run correctly or hidden. You can use tire foam (it comes in a black and orange can at autozone or advanced auto parts) and spray it on everything, then just take a rag and wipe it off the hosing and plastic. You can leave it on everything else it will be fine. Wash it with a hose after that if you want but you can let that stuff stay on there. it will degrease the engine bay for you

You can also do the "little" things. They add up. Like the battery tie down, it looks rusty so take it off, sand it, and repaint it black. Do enough things like that and polish up on any metal, and it'll look like a brand new engine bay.

i agree with the above said. Look for loose things that can be grouped together and tied off. then spray the tire foam and wipe it down. It will be all sparkley after that.

A good engine degreaser is purple power. strong stuff let it sit for like 20 minutes and spray it off at your local self wash.

I did many of the same thing above when I put my new setup in. One thing I also did to the actuall body panels AND the underside of the hood was to get a rag and spray it with carb cleaner. With an other clean rag I would wipe all the grime off the body panels and quickly dry it with the other clean rag. It will make ahuge diffwerence. Just keep in mind that carb cleaner evaporates so you have to keep spraying the rag. Dont over do it and rub the paint off either, but you get the idea.

I also went and bought new vacuum lines and that helped as well. One they look a ton better, btu I also routed them so they were bot as visible.

Wow you're right, That engine bay looks disgusting.. Although, ALMOST every car in the gallery looks like a spider web filled with wires. While my 2g is down, I have done ALOT of cleaning up to get rid of and re-route all of the wires so it looks like there is jsut a motor and tranny. Things you can start to do if you have alot of time:

--Battery in trunk.

-Relocate Fuse box (As in, Unbolt it and move it down by the tranny on the side of the 'frame rail'.

-Take your plastic guard off behind the pass. wheel and turn your intake upside down, (Your airfilter will be behind the dirt/mud guard that's connected to the bumper.

-Get a 1g coolant overflow bottle and relocate it next to where your filter will be when you turn the intake upside down, The top and lid/hose, Will come out where your upper intercooler pipe goes through that hole.

- Clean up and hide any wiring harness' that you can, Relocate them and move them around to a place that no one would be able to see them.

-Shorten all your vac hoses and other misc lines that make the car look like a mess.

-Remove your cruise control.

-Polish your heatshield, Remove your sparkplug cover and make one out of sheetmetal, Which then you can polish. Re-paint your valve cover.

Those are only a few things to get you started on your project.

(Also, The picture I attached is the same intake you have, Turned upside down with a little straight bracket to hold the mafs up.)
I will attach a picture of my enginebay so far (The fuse box is not there now, I needed to bolt it to the stock location to get it out of my way for a few minutes. Also, The few wires that are hanging where the tranny would go are now re-located and hid. Ultimatly, When youa re finished you should have a motor/tranny/turbo, And spark plug wires... That's really all that should get attention when you open your hood. Not a spider-web of wires like the enginebay you posted.

Get rid of that yellow thing around your battery. Grab some blue wire loom from autozone and some blue vacuum hoses from atpturbo.com. Use accordingly. It will really make it look a lot better. Your goal is to show a few lines, but not too many.

The yellow thing is a battery warmer that will only be on the car in the winter. It helps with starting the car in the morning since I leave for work at 4:50 AM. What would the blue wire loom be used for?

Any tips on this? I don't want to remove the wrong thing. Which parts do I remove, can you pull off my picture and draw arrows on it and then repost it showing which parts to take off. I was planning on doing that and removing my whole A/C system. I already cut the A/C belt off because the A/C stopped working and had the system evac'd.

hmm... i wonder why that posted so small, see if it works this time.

That was with little or really no time invested under the hood cleaning it all up. Just take some things off and paint them, get rid of a few, and hide others. If you see something that just bothers you, hide it in a place that is lower than your view and you wont have to worry about it anymore. I know that picture isnt all that clean of an engine, but that is about 2 years old so its much different now.

First thing that jumps out at me would be the heat shield and rusty parts (master cylinder bracket, battery tir down etc). Take these off, sandblast & repaint them. Valve cover also looks like it could use a redo. Get some engine degreaser and go to town. Group wires & hoses together with wire loom or colour matched zip ties. Here's a shot of mine, haven't done too much just try to keep it nice and clean and as factory as possible, no rice for me ;) . Actually this pick was taken if the fall before the car went into storage so that was 6 months of driving without a major clean as I do that in the spring.

All the advice above is good. DSMparts.com and diamondstarmotorsport.com has some good parts for your engine bay spark plug cover, fuse box cover, etc... little things will make your engine stand out. as said above some color wire looms and vacuum hoses or stainless steel hose kits which can be bought at autozone pep boys and ebay will help but mainly paint or polish parts that look rusty or old. then clean your engine as often as you wash your car with a rag and spary cleaner like windex. it'll work just fine. becareful when using engine degreaser because if you don't wash it off good it'll turn white espically in those hard to reach places. as far as the battery just upgrade to an optima battery since it is a gel type battery with at least a 1000 CCA it should work just as fine. the yellow top optima battery is the strongest out of the three (blue, red, yellow) take some pics when you are done and post it. i would like to see an after pic.

IMPORTANT!: be careful when washing your engine bay. make sure your engine is not running and let it drip dry for at least an hour or two to prevent any electrical shorts. do not wet your air filter or coils.

here are some before and after pics of my engine bay. I am still working on it. I just ordered an OBX polished oil catch can, coolant reservoir tank, and power steering reservoir.

Just work on hiding a lot of the emisions stuff. Pop the battery in the back and start tucking vacuum lines around. Move to a non-cruise throttle cable or just tuck the hardware for it under the manifold or along the sides of the engine bay.

I want to do the battery relocation to the back of the car, but I am not sure on what fuse to use for the positive battery cable. Can anyone provide some advice on this and where to get it? I have a good forum on how to relocate it, but it doesn't lit the supplies for the fuse.

since most battery cable is a 0-4 guage and usually have a fusible link instead of a fuse i would suggest just using a stinger inline fuse for aftermarket soundsystem. since a fuse acts as a protection in case something happens the size of fuse you want is up to you. just remember the lower the fuse rating the easier it is to burn. personally i would use a fuse for a 1000-1500 watt amplifer. also make sure to connect either another fuse or just use the same one to protect the alternator line. be sure to install a circut breaker near the battery to cut off power in emergencies.

you can find all items i mentioned above can be found at any car audio shop, ebay, electroinic store, but i think Darvex.com has the best deals and great shipping

Think of it like decorating your living room. Paint and matching colors does wonders. . . .
Well I have replacement blue hoses coming in this week as well as I got some wire loom. I am planning on cleaning things up this Saturday. I figured out that in order to take off the cruise control I need a non-cruise control throttle cable, so that will be a little while before I can do that. I am going to try and do the battery relocation this weekend also. I'll post pictures if I get everything done I wanted too. I am trying to resolve a boost leak somewhere behind my intake by the throttle area, so that is my biggest priority this weekend. Thanks for all the advice so far.
