A couple days ago i noticed a clanking noise in my engine bay. The sound changed with RPM but rather you cannot hear it or it goes away after about 3500rpm. The noise is not drastically loud but it is noticeable. Sometimes it gets really loud, but for the most part its not.

I noticed its coming from the timing side of the motor, kind of where the a/c an crank pulley are. I don't suspect it to be lifter tick either since i just changed my oil and filter. The timing belt has been changed like probably 10k or less ago. It has a slight leak in the lower timing cover(haven't looked into it yet)

Sorry i don't have a video or anything, i could probably get one tomorrow.

Please let me know what you think.

- Thanks.

Did you change the harmonic balancer? Sometimes they look good but have spun enough to ruin the harmony or be out of balance. Im doing a BSE and timing belt change right now and getting all the parts has slowed me down. But i rather not have to get back in there till i do a motor swap this spring.

could be a worn pulley ticking. one easy way to check is to spray the pulleys with wd40 or even soapy water while the engine is running. if the sound changes or goes away then your in the right place.

Ooh I cant stand chasing engine noises.... You could start by pulling off the top part of your timing cover for a quick inspection. Also if you want to take the time, remove your belts, grab a stethoscope and spin the pulleys by hand. or with belts connected and engine running, use said stethoscop to probe engine components for the source of the noise. Just use extreme caution. A video would really help if ya could too

Also be aware of the possibility of a bad hydraulic timing belt tensioner. You wouldn't want that sound to be your tensioner arm/pulley assembly flopping around in there.

Thanks for the replies, I don't think i noticed it this morning, but when I go back out i'll listen and see if it is still doing it

Ugh, I cant seem to find my camera...

was balance shaft deleted or belt changed when timing belt was changed?

I don't know if it was deleted but i think it was not. Yes, Hopefully. The PO took it to a mechanic to get it changed so, most likely.

The noise has stopped :hmm: maybe there was just a rock or something stuck somewhere or the noise is just not noticeable anymore. Lets hope it stays that way :thumb:
